Since forming in 2002, the band has released four full-length albums.

Several of Streetlight's members were already well known among the New Jersey ska community for their roles in past ska bands from that area, most notably Catch 22's Tomas Kalnoky, James Egan, Mike Soprano, and Josh Ansley, as well as One Cool Guy's Stuart Karmatz, Pete Sibilia, Dan Ross, and Chris Paszik.

The band's first album, Everything Goes Numb, was released on August 26, 2003, and was distributed by Victory Records. They headlined their first ever show at Rutgers University on December 9, 2003 in front of a sold out audience.

The line-up has gone through several changes since the band's conception and currently consists of Matt Stewart on trumpet, Mike Brown on alto and baritone saxophone, Jim Conti on alto and tenor saxophone, Tomas Kalnoky on guitar and lead vocals, Pete McCullaugh on bass guitar, Karl Lyden on trombone, and Chris Thatcher on drums.

Though the band has enjoyed little mainstream commercial success, they have received acclaim in alternative music circles, and their debut album is currently in Interpunk.com's top 100 items, over 2 years after its release. In addition, they regularly sell out their live shows, and their first few shows at Rutgers and The Stone Pony not only sold out, but had people coming from as far as Minnesota and Canada. Their second album, a reworking of Catch 22's Keasbey Nights was released on March 7, 2006.

Streetlight Manifesto's third album, entitled Somewhere in the Between came out on November 13, 2007. Rumors also have it that the band is currently working on a series of 8 albums entitled "The 99 Songs of Revolution" in co-operation with Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, a side-project of singer Tomas Kalnoky slated for release in early 2009.

On November 17, 2009, the band's website announced that "99 Songs of Revolution: Volume One" has been ready for release for quite some time but "some record labels are just plain horrendous." They are also in the process of arranging a tour for 2010 but will spend some time in the studio until they have "a few records to release."

The first album of 99 Songs of Revolution was released on March 16, 2010. On this CD, the band covered songs by artists such as The Postal Service, Radiohead, and NOFX.

I really like "If Only For Memories" as an interesting one to throw out there. "The Hands That Thieve" is fantastic too, I love when almost every line is harmonized, that backup singer is a real MVP. Streetlight is my favorite band and honestly I think they just got better and better with each new album.

Ska music is all about the accented rhythms on the off beat that are usually played by a guitar or keyboard. Ska Punk bands typically play the off beat ska rhythm during verses (sometimes using a cleaner or brighter guitar tone) and then bring in the loud, crunchy punk energy for the choruses. Great examples of this include the song "New Girl" by The Suicide Machines and "Beer (Song)" by Mustard Plug.

I highly recommend you dive deeper into Streetlight's discography. Their music has been influenced by a shit ton of different genres from classical and folk to latin and jazz. They're easily one of the most talented and original bands still around in their scene today.

Streetlight Manifesto is my all-time favorite band! If you want to do a long form video on these guys, might I suggest either A Moment of Silence immediately followed by A Moment of Violence (they should really be played as if they are one song) as well as Somewhere In the Between and With Any Sort of Certainty - those songs are a good representation of their growth over time (and are also my personal favorites 😉). My second suggestion would be the song Here’s To Life, and follow up with the B.O.T.A.R. version of the same song. I saw the BOTAR live performance at the Beacon Theater in NYC a few years ago and it was awe-inspiring.

Seeing this band live again next month, first time I ever saw them was still the most fun concert I’ve ever been to. Incredibly good band. Also, I’ve always felt Streetlight was different from all the other “ska punk” bands. They utilize all the brass instruments much more and they often lead the song. They have many parts that are more mariachi or jazz than reggae influenced. They just get called ska punk because it’s punk speed and vocals with brass. But I think they’re musically more creative and advanced than Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Mustard Plug, etc.

I think Streetlight reactions are the #1 thing I’ll click on youtube, above anything else ever, especially if I know the reactor will really enjoy them. But also consider doing lyrical breakdowns, because their lyrics are some of the most inspirational words I’ve ever heard. They don’t have a single song that isn’t really deep and inspirational, so combined with their instrumental complexity, they’re just such a mindblowing listen.

Lyrics or not, check out If Only for Memories, With Any Sort of Certainty, The Hands that Thieve, Somewhere in the Between, or even just the studio version of this song for more compositional brilliance. Or check out their older stuff like Keasby Nights, Here’s to Life, or Everything Went Numb for a less refined but more “powered up” sound.

They may be one of my favorite bands of all time tbh. They are a big band from the 50's disguised as a ska/punk band.

The latin/gypsy/jazz influence is insane. And the vocal quality generally stands up with any of the best hard rock to ever be sang. They are masters of the art of music imo.

I'm just so freaking proud to see them bring you joy. All time favorite band. I hope one day I can manage to see them live. They're still relatively unknown from my experience and I just cannot recommend them enough. So fun. Every player is incredibly talented and they always give each person a chance to showcase their talent in their songs. I digested completely All or Nothing in middle school and it has been a love affair ever since. While yes they are Ska punk, I think they kind of exist in a class of their own.

Coming in from outside your normal community! Loving the energy on this and the reaction to The Three of Us. These guys are easily my favorite band of all time; just so much to love about their writing and arranging. Your Day Will Come is a powerful number if you haven’t checked that one out yet.

If you’re looking for more music to scratch that ska-punk itch, I highly recommend Kemuri as well. They’re a Japanese band and I believe (?) have played shows with these guys, Less Than Jake, and other ska-punk icons. Their chart Shiroi Bara is an absolute must-listen.

I've seen Streetlight live on multiple occasions over the years, and yeah, musically and energetically they're almost impossible to top. Their sound is an incredibly tight and refined sound, and they're a blast to see. Honestly, they're one of the best bands the ska/punk wave produced, and I'd love to hear more from them.

Drove six hours to see them live a few years ago at the Pine Belt Arena (a shitty high school gym in New Jersey). They absolutely kept the energy up the whole show, which was considerably longer than planned - they started late so added a bunch of songs to the setlist. One of the best concerts I've been to, and they seemed like they genuinely enjoyed being there

There are so many other great songs to choose from in their catalogue. The Blonde Leads the Blind off of this same album, Oh Me Oh My off of The Hand That Thieves. I have been annoying my family and neighbors with these guys for like 2 decades now haha. I remember taking bass lessons in high school and I took some of their songs to my teacher because he was this really hip jazz/funk guy, and it blew him away. Monster bass lines, this was Pete McCollough but they had another guy named Chris Paszik on their first album. Really great players, a lot of the bass work is very sophisticated and melodic.

The differentiation between ska and punk in my mind (more from a guitar-centric perspective) is that the ska parts are usually off-beat bar chords without distortion (like if you sped up reggae a lot), whereas the punk parts are usually power chords with distortion. That’s a gross simplification, but one that often holds up across a bunch of bands.

I'm so glad you picked a live video for these guys, they are by far one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. They never ever disappoint.

As far as the genre goes, no one knows where to really place Streetlight. They come from ska punk roots but they kind of evolved out of that niche and are now sort of unclassifyable imho. At the very least, I wouldn't think of them as an archetypal "ska/punk" band. Awesome nonetheless.

Any and all songs they've put out would be equally great for you to react to next. There are no bad ones. For this reason I think the Slow Burn approach would be really great.

Please do a deep dive on Everything Went Numb, their first album. It isn't the singer, Tomas Kalnoky's first work, that was with Catch 22 (which streetlight later "covered") ((And to go into even more depth, his real first gig was a band called Gimp)) but I think it's their best collection of music. It has Tom's angst and his rebellious side, his worries, and his core values on display.

I've seen streetlight live 3 or 4 times and theyve been incredible everytime. Highly recommend.

Streetlight Manifesto is by far the best live band I’ve ever seen. Their recorded stuff is super impressive, but when they pull it all together with even more passion and complexity in their live performances, for several hours straight, it is a mindblowingly great show

Please check out Thank You Scientist! Prog metal with a brass section, they were insane live, I can't believe the technicality.

Streetlight manifesto is def one of my favorite if not favorite bands, been listening to them since I was 16 (im 32 now) please do more reactions for them, theyre brilliant! From what I hear Thomas Kalnoky doesnt like to consider their music just ska its def a fusion of many things.
Ive been going to their shows everytime they come to town since I was 17 and the energy is unmatched in the crowd, its sometimes hard to hear what hes saying because everyone is screaming and shouting along the energy is infectious

I've seen this band live 7 times, was amazing each time.
I recommend you listen to some Catch 22 (their earliest iteration) and then Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution (their side project). I think they even share some songs between all 3 projects, so it's definitely interesting to hear the evolution.

Ska/Punk is a fusion of Raggae and fast traditional punk music. But what Streetlight Manifesto does is dissect and add crazy amounts of riffs and melodies to their songs. Very talented band.

I saw Streetlight Manifesto live once. Their date in Milwaukee got canceled so they diverted to my small WI farm town instead. They put out so much energy and love. The crowd was pumping their fists and screaming the lyrics along to their songs and the band was grinning the entire time. It may have been the single greatest live band experience I've ever encountered.

Streetlight is one of my absolute favourite bands. For some really crazy horn music you should also check out Moon Hooch - Contrabass (yes they actually use a contrabass). They call themselves Cave Music (house music with really old organic instuments). It was one of the craziest shows I've ever seen.

+1 for a long form video for these guys. A Moment of Silence, Point/Counterpoint and A Better Place A Better Time would be my recommendations.

I'd also highly recommend the stripped down acoustic version of A Better Place, A Better Time by Toh Kay on the album Streetlight Lullabies. It will hit you right in the feels.

Yea! If you want to dive deep as a composer/producer check out the studio albums. The orchestration and production are really great on Somewhere In The Between as a whole, especially this album opener. I really recommend that you check out the title track ‘Somewhere in the Between’ live from Fear as well. I absolutely love the performance of the brass section in that song. They always do a fantastic job but for some reason that song got stuck a little extra in my heart.
