Ordinary Man
Stryper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You try to put a tag on me, mama
You try to make out to be so good
You try to make love you like you think I should
You're hearin' stories 'bout me, baby
I'm not what you want me to be
Before you leave me, honey
I just want you to see
[Chorus]
I am just what I am
I'm an ordinary man
If you love me, you'll understand
I'm an ordinary man

When we first met the fire was burning, girl
But now I'm tied to so many things
But I still love you, honey, please don't set me free

[Chorus]

You went and left me all alone, baby
But I still want you, girl, to see
I'll always love you, honey, please come back to me

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

In "Ordinary Man," Stryper frontman Michael Sweet sings about being true to oneself, despite the pressure to conform to society's expectations. The song addresses the struggle between following one's natural inclinations and adhering to the expectations placed upon oneself. Sweet sings about a woman who is trying to change him, moulding him into something he's not, and he's warning her before she leaves him that he can only be an ordinary man. The chorus of the song repeats this sentiment: "I am just what I am, I'm an ordinary man / If you love me, you'll understand."

The first verse of the song portrays Sweet's struggle to reconcile his own identity with the woman's expectations of him. The second verse touches on the challenges of being in a committed relationship, where one is bound to various responsibilities and commitments, and addresses the need for the woman to remain loyal and stand by him in the face of these challenges. The song comes to a close with Sweet making a plea to the woman to come back to him, as he still loves her, but reiterates that he can only be who he is: an ordinary man.
