Sympathy
Stryper Lyrics

[Written by Michael Sweet]

Step inside my carnival,
Where everything's a ride
Up and down, it's all around,
Turning side to side
I'm the outlaw - I'm the law
My way or the highway
I'm one dimensional
I broke the mold and tossed the clay
Incomprehensible
I'm the only - A rarity

[Chorus]
As hearts degrade
Can I find some sympathy?
As mercy fades
I am blind but I just want to see

Set in stone and sealed, I seem unbreakable
In despair, a simple prayer
Makes change obtainable
I'm forgiven - I forgive

[Chorus]
As hearts degrade
Can I find some sympathy?
As mercy fades
I am blind but I just want to see

Hearts degrading, mercies fading x2

[Chorus x2]
As hearts degrade
Can I find some sympathy?

As mercy fades
I am blind but I just want to see

Overall Meaning

The song "Sympathy" by Stryper talks about the struggle of a person who is perceived as an outlaw, an individualist who does things his way without caring about the consequences. The author brings us into his carnival, a place where everything is a ride, and nothing seems to have a real meaning. It is a metaphor for the state of confusion and disorientation of his life. He feels trapped in his individualism, and he is asking for some sympathy from people around him. He is aware he is going against the current, and he is struggling to understand his life's purpose. He feels that as hearts degrade, as mercy fades, he needs help, and he needs to find some pity and understanding for him to be able to move on.

Moreover, the song shows the importance of forgiveness, how it can change lives, and make change obtainable. In the midst of despair, a simple prayer can make a significant difference. The author's life is not set in stone, and he realizes he is breakable. He is asking for forgiveness, and he forgives others, knowing that this is the only way to move on in life. The song is a powerful message of hope, acknowledging the breakdown and degradation of our lives and asking for sympathy, mercy, and forgiveness.

I'm a grandma now. I've been listening to Stryper since I was a teenager. You're aging like a fine wine in tune with the New Wine. Rock on! God bless everyone!

I used to make fun of them when growing up! Because I was a black and death metallist! But now as a Christian "praise God" I found they are definitely one of the best metal bands Christian or not! It's amazing how God can open a closed mind!

Love your testimony and statement!! NOTHING is impossible with God.

@rncine

I am into total metal, Ozzy, Dio, Stryper, Skillet, Jimi when my daughter asked me to take her to a Christian concert. My mind and ears have now changed for King and Country, Tauren Wells, Toby Mac, Colton Dixon, Lauren Daigle etc etc And I still am keeping my metal bands and Christianity 🤟

I grew up as a local drummer in the 80s.....I would have LOVED to do some Stryper, but alas....out voted or no singer that could even come close...! Here it is 2022 and I'd LOVE to do a striper tribute.
