Harry, in the back of the funeral service, he reminds me of Poe. So handsome and utterly forlorn. Beautiful and tragic. It breaks my heart. Michael had so much, yet Harry had so little. Michael was betrayed, yet loyal. Harry was left unrequited.

No matter how strongly each felt, or how deeply they hurt, neither broke the delicate balance that Diane had arranged. They respected her and her decisions fully and, they both wanted only the best for the child, no matter how they felt. Somehow, Harry understood how that was.

To think, if Diane hadn’t had the affair, or had she chosen differently, she would not have a child young enough to be with her father in his solitude, and that child there to fill the yawning void that follows a death. Then to bring something of her mother back to Harry’s life, and give him a living legacy, restored to him, as much his as Michael’s.

I suppose, after all, it was meant to be the way it was... she is the daughter to both men and both embrace her. Sarah has a large, loving family. Diane chose well.

I know it is only so romantic in the whole picture, and painful as it happened for all involved but, each story should be told, because we don’t live life as a whole story, in hindsight. We are all entitled to our own experiences and our individual stories.

I think Harry said it very well, if bluntly in the end. It doesn’t discount anyone to let go of control over the individuals narrative, as it concerns them. That’s their choice. It doesn’t change the whole, but the whole cannot really be empathized with, and so much is lost if not from each perspective. It remains ephemeral, romantic, but distant. It cuts pieces from the whole, silencing the individual. Letting so much skip away, unknown even to oneself. You can never get close to what you want, yet fear. Each is valid, together as a whole or to each involved.

I’d personally love to hear Harry’s story, and I would love to hear the stories told by the other children.

What an amazing telling of a simple, yet complicated, story of the human experience. I loved this so much. All the layers and nooks and crannies and twists and turns of life and longing, all interwoven through relationships and love and joy and societal norms and expectations and disappointments and devastations. Oh, how life can change direction on a dime. These stories were so well told by gifted storytellers, leaving the viewer with so much to think about. I almost feel like a participant. The only thing missing is your mother's truth, her version of the story. Thank you for making this film.

This is my 2nd time watching this very personal, incredible documentary. It is so good, it's like a movie u don't want to end, or a book u wish u could start over without knowing the ending again. It's amazing ur love for mom and dad has brought u all together to memorialize her memory and her zest for life and what she gifted to all her wonderful kids, husband, and ex lover. Michael, knowing his own faults, being self-deprecating, refusing to blame Diane for anything...wow, just wow. Never felt like u were ashamed, as this felt the opposite to me. I loved this movie. It was fascinating and touching and heartwarming and shows the complexities of our human relationships. I loved seeing and hearing all about the vibrant, irrepressible Diane and what an impact she had on those who knew her. It evoked sadness in me to know that she had been taken too soon... especially too soon for her youngest child, Sarah. What an amazing journey this all was, with some truly interesting, entertaining people. I imagine Sarah feels deep appreciation for being part of this large, lovely network that makes up her family. I hope she was very proud of this documentary she wrote and directed. It is wonderful.

This feels more to me like a search for a missing mother, the search for a ghost, and that the "truth" or the discovery of a bio father was a moving way for her to come closer to a mother that she lost at a young age.

I have 5 sibling all half's, different father or different mother's.
I'm really a only child.
This was a well put together documentary. Life is a rollercoaster. Sometimes your up sometimes your down.
Live like she did or not. It's always a choice.

I love this. It shows the layers of motivation, needs, and situations involving each player in the story. It shows how complicated humans are, as well as how love looks different in each relationship, romantic or otherwise. It's beautiful. And overall, everyone involved is pretty open and adult about discussing infidelity and the relationship fallouts- fantastic stuff. Love is so multi-faceted. I imagine everyone's "story" looks complicated like this, in truth.

How is it? That there was so much video? In order to tell my story, one would need to be able to write with great description. She was one beautiful spirit and must be missed terribly. My heart goes out to Sarah for her perseverance and the excellent way she has helped this story along. She has wonderful courage and has told this story with such maturity. I believe there are more families that have situations like this than people think. These things are many times a secret kept or not spoken of openly because of feelings of embarassment, guilt, shame or all of the above. It's strange how this type of situation can be hard to understand until you've loved and had love lost for any reason, including infidelity. Romantic relationships and love are just complicated things and very powerful.

I am sure his wife loved him as much as he did her. She was just more of a free spirit and fell into an affair out of boredom. It takes a big man to except another man’s child and to forgive a wife who has gone astray. Michael reminds me of my own father who had a similar experience with my mom. It’s not always the husbands who cheat. This story of yours is a story that is a story of many families. Thanks for sharing this was much more than I had expected. God Bless you all

Lovely. I think putting all the "truths" and giving them equal weight and importance was the perfect way to inform this story. Poignantly, the only voice missing was Diane's, and she is the apex of the tale. Perhaps it's better that way. Perhaps if she had been alive to tell "her truth," it would have overshadowed all the others. Whether she guessed at the DNA truth or not, she chose Michael as Sarah's dad, and she never hinted to either of them that there was another option.

I love the relationship between Sarah and her dad. He was a very loving father to her and her only parent for much of her young life. And she was very protective of him. It proves that biology is only one small part of what makes a person. I wonder who it was who leaked the DNA story to the press? Shame on whoever that was.

Sad, tragic, somehow cathartic for some but I couldn’t say that I would be so understanding and put such blame on myself in any case of adultery. Glad Michael was mature enough for the sake of the daughter he raised. Good documentary though, despite its complexity and controversy.

There is no woman I would marry without having met other than Sarah polley. Her obvious intellect her bravery and leaving school to pursue class Justice, her bravery and Jill in making this documentary. And above all her refusal to be treated as a Hollywood starlet piece of meat, when so so very many attractive women long for that without apology. The fact that she walked away from that system says so much about her character.
So here's my proposal Sarah..... I'm guessing you're married, but as much as qualities can come through in media your shine in a way that is unparalleled.
The only comparisons I can find are John Steinbeck, Salman Rushdie,

It is my considered opinion that secrecy is a poison of all our individual and group actions. I have long thought secrecy to be antithetical to democracy. Many, perhaps most think me naive to believe in radical honesty. They think that pain and discomfort are, or can be avoided by hiding truths . I pretty much agree with you. As the unwitting recipient of my father’s unexpected disclosure he had been married previously and his wife had committed suicide in post partum depression leaving him with a six month old baby, I was a 10yr. old in quiet shock. What else do I not know about you? Now I understood how such a smart man could end up with the abusive monster who was my “mother:” Rebound.
Normalize any situation to your kids. Those bodies are gonna crash out of the family closet in the most hurtful, confusing and unexpected manner. I met my half sister when I was 30. As soon as I saw her I knew she was Dad’s child. She had grown up with the maternal grandparents as her mother was their only child and Dad was on the road working a lot. He saw his daughter regularly-until the Monster ruined his relationship with the grandparents. My father married a third time to a lovely and loving widow when I was 20 after a horrific divorce from the Monster. He deserved all the love and peace he enjoyed with my stepmother for his last years. He earned those years during those decades of pain, loss and domestic abuse from my monster.

Okay, firstly I am from the year 1956 and southwest Pennsylvania. Secondly, the notion that divorce has no long term ill effects on children is pure bullshit. Invented by selfish people wanting to eat their cake and have it too.
Thirdly, old harry was smitten with another man's wife and didn't give two shits about mark and Joanne let alone their father. However in his defense the lady named Diane though several years older than me she was spectacularly sexy and I doubt I could have withstood the attraction myself. And to think she was just across lake Erie. Lastly its interesting that hypocrites of society take away her kids and then a few years on and alls well. Well Mr. Broudy, having had the experience of growing up with warring parents who later divorced I can only say I’d rather be from a “broken family” than in one. The adverse effects of two very unhappily married people on their children living with constant domestic turmoil is horrific. Not all of us are as certain as you that divorce is the worst thing that can happen to the children. Of course, I don’t aspire to delude myself I hold the moral high ground regarding other people’s lives. Clearly you do.

Loved this documentary. I liked Harry at first until his narcissism was fully revealed. That he believed their "story" was HIS ALONE to tell??? He PROCREATED. He didn't take responsibility really. He COMANDERED the "story". He loved his newfound "daughter" because she reflected his lost lover. As flawed as her father was, the sperm donor was NO GEM.

It wasn't narcissism. He was one of two people having an affair. He had his story. Polley didn't want him to go public with his story so SHE could tell it with this film. This was a case of competing projects. He had to stay quiet for 30 years. Imagine how he felt. People have every right to express themselves. He deferred to his daughter, the product of his love affair, to broadcast the story in her own way. Ultimately he was selfless here.

I wouldn’t bring that up myself, which is exactly why I reacted negatively to them doing so, their implication being that hillbillies have “class” compared to other groups. It is they who first threw “shade”, albeit indirectly. Anyone who has lived in the South would recognize this as the passive-aggressive dig that it most likely was.

And, sure... errors in grammar are ubiquitous, but I’ve lived in three regions of the U.S. —and two European countries where English is a common 2nd language— and I have never heard English butchered as badly as when I lived in the southeastern U.S. AKA, “hillbilly” country. That may be an uncomfortable thing to hear, but it is nonetheless true. We all make mistakes sometimes, but, personally, I always appreciate when someone takes the time to point mine out, so I can avoid making them in the future. Being defensive robs us of opportunities to learn, and lowering standards improves nothing.

BTW, English is my 2nd language, not my native tongue. I really don’t understand how so many Americans can be only semi-literate in their native language. It’s an embarrassment, really.
