Prejudice, wrote a song about it
Like to hear it? Here it go
Free your mind

I wear tight clothing, high heel shoes
It doesn't mean that I'm a prostitute, no, no
I like rap music, wear hip hop clothes
That doesn't mean that I'm out sellin' dope, no, no, no
Oh my, forgive me for having straight hair, no
It doesn't mean there's another blood in my heir, yeah, yeah
I might date another race or color
It doesn't mean I don't like my strong black brothers

(Mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da)
Why oh why must it be this way?
(Mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da)
Before you can read me, you've got to learn how to see me, I said
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow

So I'm a sista, buy things with cash
That really doesn't mean that all my credit's bad, ooh
So why dispute me and waste my time?
Because you really think the price is high for me
I can't look without being watched, no
You rang my buy before I made up my mind, ow
Oh, now attitude, why even bother?
I can't change your mind, you can't change my color

(Mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da)
Why oh why must it be this way?
(Mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da)
Before you can read me, you've got to learn how to see me, I said
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind

(Mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da, mmm-da)
Why oh why must it be this way?
Before you can read me, you've got to learn how to see me, I said
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow
Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind and the rest will follow

Be color blind, don't be so shallow
Free your mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sub7tven feat. En Vogue's "Free Your Mind" express the frustration and anger of black women who face discrimination and stereotyping based on their appearance and race. The first two lines of the song express the frustration of being judged based on appearances. The singer states that she wears tight clothing and high heel shoes but it doesn't mean that she's a prostitute. The lyrics go on to explore the stereotypes and assumptions that people make about people based on their race, clothing, and appearance. The lyrics, "Oh please forgive me, for having straight hair. It doesn't mean there's another blood in my heirs," illustrate how societal norms and expectations can lead to assumptions about authenticity and identity.

The chorus of the song calls for listeners to "Free your mind and the rest will follow. Be color blind, don't be so shallow." This message suggests that people should ignore the preconceived notions and stereotypes that they have been taught and instead focus on getting to know people as individuals without the burden of societal expectations. The lyrics suggest that by doing this, people can begin to embrace diversity and overcome the prejudices that have long divided society.

In conclusion, "Free Your Mind" is a powerful call to action that encourages listeners to look beyond appearances and see people for who they are as individuals. It highlights the need for people to recognize and challenge their own prejudices and biases in order to create a more just and equitable society.

Everyone acting as though the lyrics in this song were ahead of it's time. As a person who was brought up in this time era... I can assure you we were all on point with this. Feels like we have gone in reverse the last ten years for some reason.

@DairwoodBarton27

We definitely have went backwards I remember the 90s too and I thought we were more progressive then than we are now

@AwestrikeFearofGods

It's funny that in the decade of the Rodney King beating and the O.J. Simpson trial, black-white relations in the USA were better than today. The amount of fear and distrust being instigated by politicians/media/educational system is sickening. Anyone who doesn't believe it, can ask an black person over 35. Same goes for m/f relations. The only thing that's gotten better is LGBT. They really had it tough in the 90s.
