Subhumans Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out in the garden there is a little white rabbit
Like Revlon torture for your clean little habits
As you wash your hair to keep it clean
You get to wonder why VosenesT green
And forget about the silent animal screams

Out in the garden there is a little white dog
Shampoo in your eyes like a burning fog
But it's tried and tested so you won't go blind
Animals killed for the good of mankind
For your shining hair so many have died

Out in the garden there is a little white cat
And you're catching cancer as you smoke that fag
"When will they find the cure?" you choke
When enough cats have died of smoke?
And they say that animals go for the throat

And the monkeys in the zoo they look so tame
In the name of science they removed their brains
To think that man evolved from this beast

Civilized savages down from the trees
The animals who run these laboratories

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Subhumans' song "Evolution" are a critique of humanity's treatment of animals in scientific research and consumerism. The first verse discusses the use of animals in personal grooming products, using the examples of a rabbit and a dog being subjected to painful experiments for the sake of human vanity. The lyrics suggest that the use of animals in this way is cruel and unnecessary, and calls into question the ethics of those who use these products.

The second verse highlights the link between smoking and cancer, drawing attention to the fact that animals are often used to study the effects of cancer-causing substances. The line "When enough cats have died of smoke?" suggests that there is a lack of concern for the suffering of animals, and that humans are willing to continue causing harm until a solution is found for themselves. The final lines of the verse point out that animals are often treated as expendable in scientific research, regardless of the pain and suffering they may endure.

The song's chorus returns to the idea of evolution and suggests that humans have not evolved as much as they may think. By comparing humans to "civilized savages" who have only recently descended from the trees, the song points out the arrogance of humans assuming that they have a right to exploit and harm animals in the name of progress.

😿😿😿"For Shiny Hair, So Many Have Died!" [One of the best goddamn lines ever, it's impossible to scream it enough to justify the PAIN it hath caused & causes still to this day. People thought boycotting fur coats would save the animals... we need to boycott the people involved... I don't care if you're "just doin' yer job," and "it's puttin' food on your dinner table!" ANYBODY that supports predatory behaviour and is making money off of it should have to face the TRUE predators of the world... the animals who are as indifferent to humans as humans are indifferent to them... I'm talking in a gigantic, uh... octagon ring(?) Tigers/Gorillas/Wolves, all are welcome:

[Of course, those humans too cowardly can choose instead to be the replacements of the former test-subjects, and hope-against-hope that the now-liberated creatures don't bungle the incisions... no thumbs... it's all just "trial-and-error" EXPERIMENTATION, right?]

Fun fact: there are more human slaves now than ever before in all of known human history. From the harvesting of children's foreskin for anti-aging creams, to the mining of cobalt for electric car batteries. In China, they had to put nets outside of factory windows due to children throwing themselves to their deaths. Now they get caught by a net and sent right back to work. But sure, the animals matter.....
