Garden Grove
Sublime Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We took this trip to Garden Grove
It smelled like Lou-dog inside the van, oh yeah
This ain't no funky reggae party, $5 at the door
It gets so real sometimes, who wrote my rhyme
I've got the microwave, got the VCR
I got the deuce-deuce in the trunk of my car, oh yeah

If you only knew all the love that I found
It's hard to keep my soul on the ground
You're a fool, don't fuck around with my dog
All that I can see I steal, I fill up my garage

'Cause in my mind
Music from Jamaica, all the love that I found
Pull over there's a reason why my soul's unsound

It's you
It's that shit stuck under my shoe
It's that smell inside the van
It's my bed sheet covered with sand
Sitting through a shitty band
Getting dog shit on my hands
Getting hassled by the man

Waking up to an alarm
Sticking needles in your arm
Picking up trash on a freeway
Feeling depressed everyday
Leaving without making a sound
Picking my dog up at the pound
Living in a tweaker pad
Getting yelled at by my dad

Saying I'm happy when I'm not
Finding roaches in the pot

All these things I do
They're waiting for you

Overall Meaning

The song “Garden Grove” by Sublime is about the band’s experience traveling to Garden Grove, a neighborhood in Orange County, California. The song starts off by describing the odor of their dog, Lou-Dog, inside their van. They then describe their destination as not a “funky reggae party,” but a place where “it gets so real sometimes.” The band members go on to describe the possessions they have in their van, including a microwave, VCR, and a gun in the trunk.

The lyrics then shift to the love that the singer has found. They describe the difficulties in keeping their soul grounded and the warning not to mess around with their dog. The next verse goes on to describe the negative experiences they’ve been having, such as waking up to an alarm and injecting needles into their arm. They describe picking up trash on the freeway, feeling depressed everyday and getting yelled at by their dad for living in a tweaker pad.

The song then ends with the singer stating that all these things they do are “waiting for you.” The meaning behind this line is open to interpretation, as it could be directed towards the listener, the band members themselves, or society in general.

I memorized the lyrics of this whole album as a teen. My dad would play it in the house when I was really young. How young? My dad got a call one day from my kindergarten that I was singing "pop a cap in Sancho and slap her down" in class. Was kicked out for the day. Dad was great about it, but worried about me singing it again, so he simply didn't play them again for about 5 years... but yeah, one of my earliest memories is hearing Sublime on our sound system :)

Me too I'm 33 now. My favorite album as a young man

@wickedwildwezt

Dude me too I’m 20 and I grew up in a household of awesome music (three 6, Pantera, Sublime, Alice In Chains, and so much more) and sublime was my dads favorite band and I got suspended for singing smoke two joints 😂😂 my dad would listen to it in the morning while he smoked before work and I’d be waiting for the bus lmao. I took a Tenacious D album to school and wanted my teacher to play a song 😂😂

@myothernameisnana7188

When my boys were little and going to a private Christian School, they got in trouble for singing Offspring lyrics . .. "Give it to me baby ..." I had to stop playing it in the car. ;(

@ScottChicago

That's fucking awesome! What a great memory
