Sublime with Rome performed their first gig together in February 2009 near Gaugh's home in Nevada, followed by an appearance at Cypress Hill's Smokeout Festival in San Bernadino that October. On April 20, 2010, the band embarked on their first-ever US tour with dates going into that fall. After positive reaction on the road, Sublime with Rome released a debut album on Fueled By Ramen records in July 2011.
In December 2011, Bud Gaugh revealed in an interview that he would be leaving Sublime With Rome and KROQ's Accoustic Christmas would be his last show. He saying he wanted to go home and spend more time with his family. He later went on to say "It was really good for the first few months, after that, it just felt wrong. Not playing the songs but playing them with the name Sublime, without Brad." When asked if he saw the band reuniting in the future Gaugh replied "No, I am done with SWR. I would be into playing music with Eric Wilson, however." He was replaced by Josh Freese.

Swimin throught the headlights now
Hit me out of sight
Say do you wanna fist fight
We live in peace yet they wanna start war
Dont want no police knockin down on your door
I said ooh yeah
No it doesnt feel right now
Its got you jumpin from the start
Real life
It aint always on tha bright side
Real life
The war is still runnin
Keep on runnin while you can
Runnin for the promise land
Lookin for the promise land
Oooh ooh

Hit me out of sight
Say do you wanna fist fight now
We live in peace yet they wanna start war
I wanna know

The lyrics to Sublime with Rome's song "Promise Land Dub" convey a sense of searching and striving for a better life, while facing the obstacles and injustices that exist in the world. The opening lines "Searchin through the night, Swimmin through the headlights now, Hit me out of sight, Say do you wanna fist fight" depict a restless and turbulent environment. It suggests a desire to escape the negativity and conflict, but also a willingness to defend oneself if necessary.
The lyrics touch upon the paradox of living in a supposedly peaceful society yet still experiencing the urge to fight and defend one's own existence. The lines "We live in peace yet they wanna start war, Dont want no police knockin down on your door" highlight the tension and disruptiveness that can persist even within seemingly harmonious surroundings. It reflects a frustration with the hypocrisy and double standards of society.
The repeated refrain of "Real life, Its got you jumpin from the start, Real life, It aint always on tha bright side" emphasizes the unpredictable and challenging nature of reality. It acknowledges that life is not always easy or pleasant, but it encourages perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. The song ultimately suggests that the quest for a better life or "Promise Land" requires continuous effort and running forward, despite the ongoing war and struggles.
