Lazarus
Submethod Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been a long time since we've been alive
Since we've known what we're living/fighting for
Rise up, disobey, are the words inside
Disobey, rise up, are the words in our deepest/darkest
Dreams
Disbelieve all the world will preach, only time will
Teach
Don't deny every heartless eye, cutting like daggers
Won't ever show us why.

It's been forgotten: Discovery is no crime.
Death is a gimmick and dying is what we buy

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Submethod's song Lazarus speak about a need to rise up and disobey the current order of things. The opening lines imply that living and fighting have become meaningless, and there is a sense of apathy that has set in. However, the refrain - "Rise up, disobey" - offers a glimmer of hope. The singer is calling on the listener to break free from the complacency that keeps them locked into the status quo, to take action and defy authority.

The lines "Disbelieve all the world will preach, only time will teach" reinforce the idea that things may not be as they seem. The world may try to convince us of certain truths, but in reality, only time and experience can reveal the truth. The final two lines of the song - "Death is a gimmick and dying is what we buy" - speak to the commodification of death in society, where end-of-life care and funerals have become big business. The lyrics suggest that we have been sold a lie about what it means to live and die, and it is up to us to reject that falsehood and seek true discovery.
