1) Subset are a London based Romantic Post-Punk Indie Rock band featuring Rom Daste on vocals and guitar, Jay Garrett on bass and vocals, Rob Robertson on guitar and vocals and Steve Higgs on drums. Their debut EP was released in August 2009 and the Double A Side single - But We Barely Know Each Other and When The Dressing Gown Falls Down was released in January 2010.
2) Subset, the Austin, Texas rock band, was formed in February 1999 by Lindsey Simon and Nathan Fish. Simon writes the lyrics, is the main vocalist, main guitarist, and sometimes plays bass.
3) Subset was also the name given to a short-lived collaboration between The Presidents of the United States of America and Sir Mix-A-Lot. Subset went on tour and recorded an album together, but the material was never released.
4) Subsets is a drum & bass and chillstep producer/remixer from Britain. He's also been known as Subset [⊆] and simply Subset.
5) An Australian Dub-techno producer signed Deeptakt Records in Germany.
To quote from the sleeve notes of his second release on Deeptakt Records, Subset is an "upcoming artist from Australia. On his second release for our label, Subset made
five outstanding tracks, plus a Dub Cut remix of "Eureka St" by Narcotic 303.
Drawing influences from many sources and finding inspiration in natural surroundings,
Subset created an easy flowing journey through realms of dub music. By staying true
to the aesthetics of the style he gave us a timeless listening experience, but with a
precise attention to detail and subtle sense of melody he left off a personal signature,
which will hopefully resonate with those appreciating the deep sounds and slow vibes."

Defeated
Subset Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If you're gonna wanna pull off the
Greatest escape yet
And get in better position
This edition only comes in too's and for's.
From what ransom tells me
You pulse at a rate from
Lit at noon
Get it soon
You won't need scores to make it from the heart.
Here's to all the fallen comrades on the field
Sargeants breathing down their necks
Recite to feel like
Any information that leads to an arrest
Will be
Rewarded
Appropriately.
And when you get it back
My hard-earned cash
You'll see what it is that keeps me breathing.
Just a substitute for a
Natural reaction when I get defeated.
The lyrics of Subset's song "Defeated" speaks of someone who is trying to escape from a situation that has defeated him. The song starts with the statement "Gotta settle down," which gives the impression that the singer needs to regroup and calm down to be able to plan their escape. The lyrics then suggest that one needs to be in a better position to pull off the "greatest escape yet." This implies that perhaps the singer is trying to overcome an obstacle or a challenge, which seems insurmountable at first.
The song's second verse, "From what ransom tells me, you pulse at a rate from ten to fifteen B-U-T, lit at noon, get it soon, you won't need scores to make it from the heart," suggests that the singer is running out of time and needs to act fast. The reference to the pulse and the pace of the escapee implies that he is feeling the pressure and urgency of the situation. The reference to "get it soon" could also imply that the singer has someone waiting for them or that they have a deadline to meet.
The song's chorus then mentions the fallen comrades who have been defeated and are being watched over by sergeants. The singer seems to be reciting something to feel like they are gaining strength or confidence. The "information that leads to an arrest" is perhaps a metaphor for overcoming the obstacle or challenge in question, which will be "rewarded appropriately." Finally, the last verse speaks of the singer's desperation to get out of the situation and that the escape from it is the only substitute for a "natural reaction." The meaning of this "natural reaction" is not clear, but it could be interpreted as the singer's instinct to fight back rather than fleeing.
