I like how they try to make all of the 'tons of waste' sound like it's 'scary nuclear waste'. When none of the nuclear waste was actually left there.

They left the coolant water, but the fuel is solid ceramic encased in zirconium or other metal. The only thing that would cause the water to be 'radioactive' is neutrons hitting the hydrogen in the water and become tritium or deuterium.

Deuterium is more or less stable. The ocean has a ton of it - though it is diffuse compared with hydrogen. Tritium meanwhile has a half-life of 12.3 years, (so it's already halved itself more than 4 times by now.) and more importantly, poses no risk to humans. Tritium beta decays, and with such a low amount of energy that it can't penetrate your clothes or the top few dead layers of skin in any meaningful amount. And it has no bio-loading. If you drink or inhale it, it will not concentrate in one part of the body, and it will get flushed out of the body with a half-life of about 10 days. Eating a banana exposes you to more radiation. Which means that 'toxic waste' is really just the diesel fuel. And... well: duh!

So basically, we have an underground base made of sheet metal run by a nuclear reactor. They took the nuclear reactor out and left the base. And now there is a terrible, scary possibility that what amounts to an abandoned farm with a few tractor full of diesel is going to emerge from the ice.

This is pretty pathetic. A cool story, but really pathetic that they spend all this effort trying to make things sound scary and try to make it sound like climate change is going to turn Greenland into a Nuclear wasteland.

I always wondered what happened to Camp Century. They should find one of the escape shafts and see if they can get into the tunnels.

Great video guys! Nicely edited and really in depth. I’ve heard of Camp Century before and have always been in awe. But the geo-political impact its having now never even crossed my brain waves!
As an American, I believe we should obviously clean up our mess, way before the end of this century, along with sticking to the Paris agreement and actually going above and beyond it. And Denmark should help!
I will definitely share this video because, everyday, new and vast evidence shows how negligent we’ve been with our planet and it’s time for us to act. Immediately and as a cohesive intelligent species.

I was interested in the shifting ice.

Is the migrating and could fracture the under-ice structures and containment?

Glaciers do move.

Please keep making more videos with this format. Thanks!

What do you mean who should be responsible for the clean up? isn't it pretty obvious? its a US military base..

Russell

Denmark didn't want Russia to take it over US only way to stop that So Denmark was happy to host US & gain their protection Cost savings from not doing Israel level of defensive spending mandatory service etc priceless Cost of cleanup Nothing in comparison REAL WORLD IS NOT SO SIMPLE AS ONE WOULD LIKE IT TO BE

See my comment Cleaning up such a remote area would create far more pollution than what exists there now Instead clean up equal or greater amount elsewhere in Greenland along coasts where it's pollution is already hurting environment & mitigation won't create more pollution than the clean up reduces

oh you have much to learn my young naive you tube learner, this is how the yanks see it, "We built this monstrosity, if it works it's ours, if it fatigues and starts to crumble it yours!"

@Thobias Nielsen Rubbish what you are saying, Denmark voted it out in the 70s where there was big debate about nuclear power. Denmark even had experimental nuclear power in the place Risø who was founded by nobel prizewinner Niels Bohr who is one of the father of nuclear science. Risø was closed in the 70s after this debat.

@Patrick Watkins Study physics, perpetual motion doesn't exist.
