Obsession
Subways Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One's hiding up in the bedroom
Another out in the yard
I waited for an ending
So I could make a start
And if it comes together
I'll only tear it apart
I'm seeing god in a liar
The mirror says who you are

I could travel ten thousand miles
So I could escape your smile

Another comic book ending
Another way to die
Can you hold it together?
Can you give it a try?
And give it hell for leather
And tell a beautiful lie
Ill make it worth every second
Ill make it worth your time

I could travel ten thousand miles so I could escape your smile
Holding out my blood red heart
Hold my blood red empty heart

I wanna feel obsession

I could travel ten thousand miles so I could escape your smile
Holding out my blood red heart
Hold my blood red empty heart

Holding out my blood red heart
Hold my blood red empty heart

Overall Meaning

The song "Obsession" by Subways is full of contrasting images and emotions, which makes it quite cryptic and therefore, open to multiple interpretations. At its core, the song seems to deal with the inability of the singer to let go of someone or something that haunts him/her. The first two lines set the stage, with two people in two different places, trying to avoid each other. But the singer is not able to start fresh even though he wants to, having waited for an ending that never came. It is suggested that the singer sees divinity in falsehood and also questions the reflection looking back at him/her in the mirror. This could suggest a lack of clarity or trust in one's own judgment.

However, the theme of the song gets more complicated as it progresses. There is a sense of desperation in the lines "Can you hold it together? Can you give it a try? And give it hell for leather, and tell a beautiful lie?" These lines seem to suggest that the singer is ready to do whatever it takes to hold on to whatever they are obsessed with. The last four lines of the song repeat the refrain, which is the only constant in the song. The obsession is still palpable and the singer is still trying to escape its hold, though ultimately it seems like an impossible task.

In summary, the song "Obsession" seems to be a beautiful and melancholy exploration of the human psyche, its inability to let go, and the extreme measures one is ready to take to hold on to things that can only offer pain.
