Before Your Birthday Ends
Suckers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you fall then you fell out of your mother's womb and splattered all across the floor.
Then the doctor swings you by your umbilical cord and smashes you against the door.
When you know that you're sure you can feel yourself crying like you've never cried before.
When you reached for the light that you rode into, did you realize there was something more.

Better go get your friends, before your birthday ends.

If that blood in your veins don't suit you well then drain yourself and clean em with bleach.
When clouds outnumber the stars in the sky and the ocean has swallowed the beach.

Then you go find your friends.

You can always be sure they're in the sun ready to make you whole again.

If you fall then you've fell and I'll pick you up and make sure that you smile.
When you're mad at me it won't last long, you're gonna laugh in a little while.

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of the song "Before Your birthday Ends" by Suckers is a thought-provoking reflection on birth and the beginning of life. The lyrics suggest a violent and messy birth, with the imagery of the baby splattering across the floor and being swung against the door. However, the crying after birth is also highlighted as a new and intense experience. The second half of the stanza shifts focus to the moment of birth, asking whether there is something more to life than just the physical birth.

The chorus of the song then urges the listener to make the most of their time with their friends before their birthday ends, perhaps alluding to the shortness and impermanence of life. The next stanza, however, takes a darker turn with the mention of the blood in our veins not suiting us well and the need to clean ourselves with bleach. The imagery of clouds outnumbering stars and the ocean swallowing the beach is a reference to the natural world in chaos, forcing us to find solace in our friends.

The final stanza reassures the listener that even if they fall, their friends will be there to pick them up and make them smile again. The song can be seen as a reflection on the importance of human connection and making the most of the time we have in life.
