By The Sea
Suede Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She can walk out anytime anytime she wants to walk out that's fine
She can walk out anytime anytime she feels that life has passed her
by
And when I start my new life I won't touch the ground
I'm gonna try hard this time not to touch the ground.
He can walk out anytime anytime he wants to walk out that's fine
He can walk out anytime across the sand into the sea into the
brine
And when I start my new life I won't touch the ground,
I'm gonna try hard this time not to touch the ground.
So we sold the car and quit the job
and shook some hands and wiped the make-up right off,
And we said our good-byes to the bank
left Seven Sisters for a room in a seaside shack,
And when I start my new life I won't touch the ground,
I'm gonna try hard this time not to touch the grounds

...it's by the sea we'll breed
...into the sea we'll bleed...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Suede's "By the Sea" speak about the desire for a new beginning and the longing for freedom. The first two lines express that the female character can walk out anytime she wants to without any objections. This line is repeated twice, emphasizing the freedom that one should have in their lives. The next lines express the character's feeling that life has passed them by and their desire for a new life. The singer shares this feeling and expresses their desire to start anew and not to touch the ground again.

The chorus repeats in the second verse, except, this time, the male character is the one who can walk out anytime he wants to. The lyric "across the sand, into the sea, into the brine" is an allusion to the myth of Icarus, a son of Daedalus, who flew too close to the sun with wings made of feathers and wax. The allusion implies that the person is willing to escape at any cost, even if it may lead to their destruction.

The last verse expresses the characters' final decision to sell their car, quit their job, and leave their old lives behind. They move to a seaside shack and start a new life. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the desire to remain ungrounded and free even in their new life. The phrase "it's by the sea we'll breed...into the sea we'll bleed" implies a connection between the characters' identity and the sea. The sea is an extension of their freedom, and they are not bound by society's rules or limitations.
