Saturday Night
Suede Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Today she's been walking
She's been talking
She's been smoking
It's gonna be alright
'Cause tonight we'll go dancing
We'll go laughing
We'll get car sick
And it'll be okay like everyone says
It'll be alright and ever so nice
We're going out tonight
Out and about tonight

Oh, whatever makes her happy
On a Saturday night
Oh, whatever makes her happy
Whatever makes it alright

Today she's been sat there
Sat there in a black chair
Office furniture
It'll be alright
'Cause tonight we'll go drinking
We'll do silly things
And never let the winter in
And it'll be okay like everyone says
It'll be alright and ever so nice
We're going out tonight
Out and about tonight

Oh, whatever makes her happy
On a Saturday night
Oh, whatever makes her happy
Whatever makes it alright

We'll go to freak shows and peepshows
We'll go to discos, casinos
We'll go where people go and let go

Oh whatever makes her happy
On a Saturday night
Oh, whatever makes her happy
Whatever makes it alright

Oh whatever makes her happy
On a Saturday night
Oh, whatever makes her happy
Whatever makes it alright

Oh oh
La la la la la la
Oh oh
La la la la la la
Oh oh
La la la la la la
Oh oh
La la la la la la
Oh oh

La la la la la la
Oh oh

Overall Meaning

The song Saturday Night by British rock band Suede, released in 1997, is a catchy and upbeat ode to the weekend and letting go of the stresses of the week. The song follows a woman who has had a tough day – she’s been walking, talking, and smoking – but now it’s Saturday night, and she’s ready to forget all her troubles and have some fun.

The first verse sets the scene, with the singer describing the woman’s previous activities before declaring that they will go dancing tonight, “get car sick,” and have a good time. The chorus repeats the idea that “whatever makes her happy” is what will make the night alright. The second verse takes place in an office, with the woman sitting in a “black chair” surrounded by “office furniture,” creating a clear contrast between her mundane work life and the exciting world of weekend adventures. Again, the chorus repeats the idea that whatever makes her happy will make the night alright.

The bridge of the song provides a list of places the singer and the woman will go to have fun – freak shows, peepshows, discos, and casinos. The song concludes with more repeated choruses, and the upbeat melody and catchy “oh las” leave the listener with a feeling of joyful possibility.

Overall, the lyrics of Saturday Night capture the desire to let go of the week’s stress and have fun on the weekends. The song’s lyrics highlight the importance of being carefree and living in the moment, as well as the potential for the weekend to be a time of self-discovery and fun.

God I miss the 90's so much it hurts

@lingnemesis

Only Suede has the capacity to make me romanticise about commuting and public transportation.

What a beautifully crafted gem of a song. So much fragility, tenderness and raw authenticity. Now I remember why I miss the 90s.

Suede are on a par with Pulp, sheer brilliance. The noise from Oasis and Blur drowned them out. This song is timeless..

First time I heard this song, I was on a British Airways flight headed from Chicago to London.  First thing I did in London was went to a Virgin music store and bought the Coming Up CD.  I still love to pull it out and listen to it from front to end.
