The Asphalt World
Suede Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know a girl she walks the asphalt world
She comes to me and I supply her with Ecstasy
Sometimes we ride in a taxi to the ends of the city
Like big stars in the back seat like skeletons ever so pretty
I know a girl she walks the asphalt world
But where does she go?
And what does she do?
And how does she feel when she's next to you?
And who does she love in time honored fur?
Is it me or her?
I know a girl she walks the asphalt world
She's got a friend, they share mascara I pretend
Sometimes they fly from the covers to the winter of the river
For these silent stars of the cinema
It's in the blood stream, it's in the liver
I know a girl, she walks the asphalt felt world

But where does she go?
And what does she do?
And how does she feel when she's next to you?
And who does she love in time-honored fur?
Is it me or is it her?

With ice in her blood
And a Dove in her head
Well how does she feel when she's in your bed?
When you're there in her arms
And there in her legs
Well I'll be in her head

'cause that's where I go
And that's what I do

And that's how it feels when the sex turns cruel
Yes both of us need her, this is the asphalt world

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Suede's "The Asphalt World" paint a picture of a girl who is immersed in the fast-paced, hedonistic lifestyle of the city. The singer is a supplier of Ecstasy, and sometimes he and the girl ride in a taxi to the ends of the city, feeling like "big stars in the back seat like skeletons ever so pretty". The girl has a friend and they share mascara, but the singer pretends not to notice. They fly from the covers of the magazines to the winter of the river, for these silent stars of the cinema. It's in the blood stream, it's in the liver.

The chorus repeats the same questions about the girl over and over - where does she go? what does she do? how does she feel when she's next to you? - but never really answers them. The bridge brings up the idea of ice in her blood and a dove in her head, and wonders how she feels during sex when both the singer and her lover are consumed by their desire for her.

Overall, "The Asphalt World" is a dark and mesmerizing journey through a world of glamour, drugs, and ambiguous relationships.

I used to listen to this song when I was 15 and I was completely hit by Dog Man Star Aesthetics.... I used to have a friend and we shared eyeliner, so the sentence ''they scare mascara and I pretend'' reminds me to that girl every time. She was beautiful like an actress in the body of an adolescent girl, maybe she was my first love and i am straight. She became anorexic and heroin addict years later. The beautiful, intense and sweet friend of mine, so when I listen to this song I immediately think of her. Oh those were pretty old days when we used to go out to record shops ....making cassettes with Suede and Manics songs.... how I miss those days.....
Suede underline every good time of my life. And Bernard's guitar was unique to me.
