This Hollywood Life
Suede Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"She-rocker you're wasting your time
Cos you're only a girl"
She-rocker sacked the factory line for a chance of a dance in a surreal world

She said, "come rescue, rescue me from this Hollywood life
come rescue, rescue me from this Hollywood life"

She-rocker hear the audience scream for the death of the king
But a hand-job is all the butchery brings
Cos fame ain't as easy as him (how sad)

Oh come rescue, rescue me from this Hollywood life
come rescue, rescue me from this Hollywood life

Come take this Hollywood life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Suede's song, This Hollywood Life, delve into the dark and seedy underbelly of the entertainment industry. The song describes the plight of a female musician, referred to as a "she-rocker," who has left her mundane life in the factory to pursue her dreams of stardom. However, despite her talent and hard work, she faces countless obstacles and is discriminated against because of her gender.

The lyrics open with the she-rocker being told that she is wasting her time because she is "only a girl." However, undeterred, she perseveres and manages to make a name for herself in the surreal and cutthroat world of Hollywood. Nevertheless, she becomes disillusioned with the industry's faustian bargain - promising fame and fortune in exchange for one's soul.

The chorus of the song sees the singer calling out for someone to rescue her from the Hollywood life. She is tired of the exploitation, the betrayal, and the heartbreak that comes with the territory. The final verse describes the violence and abuse that often accompanies fame, with the crowds cheering as the king is butchered. The irony is not lost on the she-rocker, who understands that the thrills of fame are fleeting and often overshadowed by its dark side.

Overall, This Hollywood Life is a bleak critique of the entertainment industry, highlighting the struggles and sacrifices that artists often have to make in their quest for success.

Brilliant tune. I still think of this as the opening track to the album, as I had it on cassette and played it the wrong side round, if you see what I mean. So this, to me, was the the best ever opening track on an album even though it wasn't.

Among the several thousands of new songs I hear every year, this one got stuck into my years, but forgot the name. I spent hours and hours and hours trying to find it, because I knew it was on my PC, but no success. But yesterday, I fell asleep with my huge playlist playing, just to accidentally wake up when this one was playing. Imagine the joy!!!
