Ah Holy Jesus
Sufjan Stevens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended
That we to judge thee have in hate pretended?
By foes derided, by thine own rejected
O most afflicted

For me, kind Jesus, was thine incarnation
Thy mortal sorrow, and thy life's oblation
Thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion
For my salvation

Overall Meaning

In this hymn, Sufjan Stevens is calling out to Jesus and questioning why people have judged him and hated him. He highlights how Jesus was rejected by those who should have been his own and further ridiculed by his enemies. Stevens goes on to acknowledge that, despite these harsh realities surrounding Jesus, his incarnation, mortal sorrow, life’s oblation, anguish, and passion were all for the sake of salvation. The lyrics demonstrate how Stevens identifies with Christ’s sufferings and calls on him for mercy.

The first verse of this hymn delves deeply into the irony of Jesus' last days. He comes as a messenger of compassion, only to be met with hatred and judgment. In the second verse, Stevens dwells on the fact that Jesus’s life provided the ultimate benefit of salvation for his followers. The use of pronouns “we” and “me” reveals the personal touch and affectability of these lyrics. In all, Stevens depicts a humanized portrayal of Jesus, one that invites us to identify with his sufferings and find lasting hope in his sacrifice.

Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended,
That we to judge thee have in hate pretended?
By foes derided, by thine own rejected,
O most afflicted!

Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon thee?
Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone thee!
'Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee;
I crucified thee.

Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered;
The slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered.
For our atonement, while we nothing heeded,
God interceded.

For me, kind Jesus, was thy incarnation,
Thy mortal sorrow, and thy life's oblation;
Thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion,
For my salvation.

Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee,
I do adore thee, and will ever pray thee,
Think on thy pity and thy love unswerving,
Not my deserving.

It's been around for 400 years, it's got to be pretty good for that kind of staying power!

Of the hymns on this album, this is my favorite. The opening piano sounds like Sufjan used an upright piano to achieve the reverb.

To anyone out there doubting themselves and doubting the universe in which we live—God is love. Those who falsely invoke God to further their own agendas may discourage you, but God loves you no matter what

If you're listening to this amazing piece, wondering if there is a Jesus- He is real. He is complete, tender love and He wants to know you. Look for Him and you'll easily find Him.
