City of Roses
Sufjan Stevens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A break in the clouds is a break in my day
Face the sun of my salvation
As Hathaway Jones would have made
It his own fate
Fly by the wings of your creation

On the top of your head, there is a poem
The thought in my head, oh God only knows
As everything else will disappoint you
I used to be young and
Bold, but now I'm afraid, i'm getting so old
I follow delight to the City of Roses

It's a little-known fact that I can't cope
I’m the champion of repression
I've had it enough with the east coast
I'll die by the wings of my ambition

The city I left, the city of throes
The one that I loved, the city of hope
As everything else will disappoint you
I used to be young and bold
But now I'm of age, i'm getting so old
I follow delight to the City of Roses

A break in the clouds is a break in my day

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sufjan Stevens's "City of Roses" convey a sense of longing and nostalgia for a place that holds both enchantment and disappointment. The opening lines, "A break in the clouds is a break in my day / Face the sun of my salvation," suggest that the singer finds solace and hope in moments of clarity and brightness amidst the challenges of life. The reference to Hathaway Jones, likely a fictional character, alludes to the idea of taking control of one's own destiny and embracing the potential for greatness.

The following lines, "Fly by the wings of your creation / On the top of your head, there is a poem," reflect a celebration of creativity and the power of imagination. The singer acknowledges the fleeting nature of inspiration, noting that it is both a gift and a burden. The chorus, "As everything else will disappoint you / I used to be young and bold / But now I'm afraid, I'm getting so old / I follow delight to the City of Roses," reveals a sense of disillusionment with life's disappointments and the passage of time. The City of Roses symbolizes a place of beauty and joy, where the singer seeks solace and renewal.

In the second verse, the lyrics shift to reflect a growing dissatisfaction with the singer's current circumstances. They proclaim, "It's a little-known fact that I can't cope / I’m the champion of repression." This suggests that the singer is struggling to face and confront their own emotions, perhaps burying them deep inside. The dismissive attitude towards the east coast hints at a desire for change and a yearning for new experiences and opportunities. The final lines of the song reiterate the singer's longing for the City of Roses, portraying it as a place of hope amidst a world that often falls short.

Overall, "City of Roses" explores themes of longing, disillusionment, the passage of time, and the pursuit of happiness. It encapsulates the human desire to find a place of solace and fulfillment in a world that can often be disappointing and overwhelming.

Sufjan Stevens simply does it his way. After the triumph of "Carrie and Lowell," you'd think he'd gather his best new eggs into a basket for his "Out of Time," his breakthrough album catapulting him into the mainstream, but no. He's allergic to the mainstream and instead randomly leaks a few songs at a time, none of them less than lush, mysterious, compelling, and beautiful.

Gosh I've been going through such a weird time of positivity and depression. This song just adds to it. I can't even explain any of it but I've been going through a whole self discover for like the third time and my artwork is getting better and I just feel so hopeless but somewhat happy at the same time. Don't know how long it'll last but it's great

Hope you're better now?
