Come Thou Font
Sufjan Stevens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy unchanging love

Here I raise my Ebenezer
Here there by Thy great help I've come
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure
Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wandering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Interposed His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be
Let that grace now, like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here's my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above

Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it
Mount of Thy unchanging love

Overall Meaning

In the hymn "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing," Sufjan Stevens sings about the endless mercy and grace from God. He addresses God as the "fount of every blessing" and asks for his grace to be set upon his heart. Stevens further talks about the "streams of mercy," which never stop flowing and hence, cause a "call for songs of loudest praise." He requests God to teach him a "melodious sonnet," similar to the ones sung by the angels above. Stevens affirms that he's been fixed on the mount of God's unchanging love and declares his love for this mount.

Here, the term Ebenezer means "stone of help," and Stevens raises it, saying that he's come to this point of his life with the great help of God. He hopes to arrive safely at home with God's pleasure. Stevens acknowledges Jesus, who sought him when he was wandering from the fold of God, and Jesus rescued him, interposing his precious blood. Stevens relates himself as a debtor of grace, constrained to be aware of God's grace daily. Stevens begs that this grace, like a fetter, ought to bind his wandering heart to God. He admits being "prone to leave the God [he] loves" and declares his heart for God, asking Him to take and seal it.

I am not a believer, not formally anyway, but the emotional power of Sufjan's version of this hymn is undeniable. Brings tears to my eyes without fail. Understanding that the hymn's gaze is ultimately on a word beyond this one, I can't help but read into it an appeal to human compassion in this life, where it is so badly needed. Thank you Sufjan - your music means more to many than you'll ever know.

i appreciate your vulnerable and heartfelt take, Peter. :)

Amen! For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

The key to a lot of this seems to be that if you cannot comprehend something like the majesty of God, then at least you can experience the corollary -- being the small bean that you are in a large and churning world.
