Sufjan Stevens Lyrics

Anything we should know about your change? -- Lullay, thou little tiny child
By by lullay lullaye
Lullay, thou little tiny child
By by lullay lullaye

O sisters, too, how may we do
For to preserve this day
This poor youngling for whom we sing?
By by lullay lullaye

Herod the King, in his raging
Charged he hath this day
His men of might, in his own sight
All children young, to slay

Lullay, thou little tiny child
By by lullay lullaye
For Thy parting, nor say nor sing
By by lullay lullaye

Then woe is me, poor child, for thee
By by lullay lullaye

Overall Meaning

Coventry Carol is a traditional English carol that is believed to have been written in the 16th century. The carol is a lullaby sung by a mother to her child as she mourns the impending death of her son who is to be killed by King Herod’s soldiers. The song is a hauntingly beautiful portrayal of a mother’s pure love and her profound grief for her child. It is said that the song narrates the story of the Massacre of the Innocents, where King Herod ordered the killing of all boys under the age of two in Bethlehem, in search of baby Jesus.

The lyrics to the Coventry Carol are an interpretation of the biblical account in Matthew 2:16-18. The first verse of the song is a lullaby being sung to the infant child from his mother. The second verse is a cry for help from the mother to her sisters, asking what can be done to save her baby. The third verse depicts the actions of King Herod and his soldiers in killing innocent children. The final verse is a lament for the child who is about to die, expressing the immense sorrow of the mother at the loss of her cherished one.
