Holy Holy Etc.
Sufjan Stevens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to thee
There is a sign at the sight of thee,
Merciful and mighty
God in three Persons,
God in three Persons,
Blessed Trinity

Holy, holy, holy!
Though the darkness hide thee,
Though the eye of sinful man
Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy;
There is none beside thee,
Perfect in power
Perfect in power
In love, and purity

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy Name, in
Earth, and sky, and sea
There is a sign at the sight of thee,
There is none beside thee,
God in three Persons,
God in three Persons,
God in three Persons,

God in three Persons,
Blessed Trinity

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sufjan Stevens's song Holy Holy Holy are a reference to the hymn of the same name. The song is a worshipful and reverent ode to the Christian God, describing him as "merciful and mighty" and "perfect in power, in love, and purity." The repetition of the title phrase "holy, holy, holy" emphasizes the sacredness of God and his three-person nature as the blessed trinity.

The second verse acknowledges the limitations of human perception and the inability to fully comprehend God's glory, even though his works are all around us in the earth, sky, and sea. Despite our unworthiness, the song affirms that God is the only one who is truly holy and there is none beside him.

Overall, the lyrics to Holy Holy Holy express a deep reverence and awe for God, celebrating his majesty and highlighting his divine attributes. Through this expression of worship, the song invites listeners to join in praise and adoration of the almighty.

The throne in heaven
After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, β€˜Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.’ 2At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. 6Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.
In the centre, round the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and behind. 7The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all round, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:
β€˜β€†β€œHoly, holy, holy
is the Lord God Almighty,”
who was, and is, and is to come.’
