Woman at the Well
Sufjan Stevens Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All the answers. All the gold.
There was a high back then.
She forgot that he was told
She was a fountain pen.

Entire. Inspire. Down to the fast wire.
She made a mountain man.
In fire. In fire. Down to the last liar.
She was a fountain pen.

He has her hand.
He was her hand.

Water your isle, wonderful child.
Water your isle again.

She supposes he is wet.
She was a fountain then.
She put all her clothes in bed.
She lit a lantern then.

Entire. Inspire. Down to the fast wire.
She made a mountain man.
In fire. In fire. Down to the last liar.
She was a fountain pen.

Entire. Inspire. Down to the last wire.
She was a fountain pen.

Entire. Inspire. Down to the last wire.
She was a fountain pen.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Sufjan Stevens's song "Woman at the Well" are deeply poetic and somewhat abstract, leaving plenty of room for interpretation. The lines "All the answers. All the gold. There was a high back then. She forgot that he was told" suggest that someone had access to all the knowledge they needed at one point, but lost touch with it along the way. The reference to forgetting what "he was told" could indicate a break in communication or a lack of trust.

The repeated metaphor of the woman as a "fountain pen" is intriguing. The lines "Entire. Inspire. Down to the fast wire. She made a mountain man. In fire. In fire. Down to the last liar. She was a fountain pen" suggest that she was a source of inspiration and creativity, capable of creating something monumental (a "mountain man"), even in the face of deceit ("the last liar"). The lines "She supposes he is wet. She was a fountain then. She put all her clothes in bed. She lit a lantern then" add to the enigmatic nature of the song, leaving the listener to fill in the gaps.

Overall, "Woman at the Well" is a beautiful and evocative song that explores themes of creativity, trust, and memory.

Sufjan deserves to always be as happy as he is in this photo, beautiful man.

In the Bible, in Matthew chapter 4, Jesus meets a woman at a famous well. She did not have a socially acceptable lifestyle, yet Jesus showed her compassion (therefore, "He was her friend..." in the song). Also, Jesus talks about a fountain of living water, which is symbolic for eternal life. The woman thinks He meant that she would become a actual springing fountain (hence, "She was a fountain then..." in the song). I hope this helps!

I love that i found this now, but does you ever wonder how you'd be if you found certain songs earlier in life? I donno but Sufjan has to be my favorite composer of music of all time :)

potterpeach

i love how his songs have little things in them that tie them to some of his other songs... like around 1:27 in this one, it reminds me of "we watched it all night, we grew up in spite of it" from romulus. :)

Exactly!

Diego Rodríguez all of his songs has some kind of a connected lore, everything has a thought behind it. That’s one of the main reason I like him so much.

I agree, Sufjan's music stirs up something in the depths of my soul The subtle harmonies create perfect moods to reminisce. His songs echo an aching familiarity, yet I can never place it. The music carries emotion, but inspires it even more. That could just be me though.

Rashonality

This song never fails to make me smile, its so beautiful ^^

Just to let you guys know--apparently this is from the album 8.21 A Blue Bunny Compilation. You can find it for sale online, I think (have not purchased it). Also Sufjan wrote the song Far Physician's Son for it, which is streamable from Grooveshark, along with Woman at the Well.
