After All the Roads Have Led to Nowhere
Sugar Lyrics

Just the thought of losing you
Is much more than I can take
Tell me I'm not going crazy
Tell me that I'll be ok
After all that we've been through
Don't you see the big mistake we're making
Tell me I'm not going crazy
After all this ends up going nowhere
After all the road still leads to nowhere
After all the promises are broken
After all the after alls are spoken

Asked you where you want to go
I see you walking to the door
Don't you know that door is going nowhere
Then I thought I heard you leaving
Wake me up if I've been dreaming
Don't you see the big mistake you're making

After all I guess we're going nowhere
After all I didn't want to go there
After all the hearts have been set to breaking
After all this time I've been mistaken

Even still, I think of losing
Everything I think is sure
There's no simple remedy, it's
Something that we all endure
Be glad for what you've got
Don't take anything for granted
It's something after all

Just the thought of losing you is all
Just the thought of losing you is all

After all the roads have led to nowhere
After all the roads have led to nowhere

Overall Meaning

In the song "After All the Roads Have Led to Nowhere" by Sugar, the lyrics depict a desperate plea from the singer to their lover to not leave them. The thought of losing them is overwhelming and they beg for reassurance that they won't lose their mind. The lyrics suggest that the relationship has hit a dead end and they are stuck in a cycle of broken promises and heartbreak. The singer questions their lover's actions and decisions, and begs them to see the mistake they are making. The song seems to be about the pain of a love that has gone stale, but the singer is still holding on and hoping for a way out.

The chorus repeats the phrase "After all" several times, which could be interpreted as frustration or disappointment with the paths they have taken in their relationship. The singer is struggling to hold on to what they have, but they know that the road they are on is not leading anywhere. They are worried that their partner is leaving and they are clinging to any hope that they will stay.

Overall, the song is a poignant and emotional look at the struggles of love and relationships. The lyrics are raw and honest, and the melody is hauntingly beautiful. It's a reminder that even when things seem bleak, there is still hope and love to be found.

Is there a studio version of this song?

@Jaysthename have you tried searching on dimeadozen? there are plenty of Bob Mould shows being uploaded there lately

Jaysthename

No. But back in the late 90s, someone once included what they described as a "very rare" acoustic version of this song on a mixtape exchange cassette that they sent out to the group. It was of pristine sound quality and perhaps the most poignant Bob Mould song I've ever heard. Here we are 20+ years later, the cassette is long gone, and despite having searched online every few years since then, I can't even find a ghost of a whisper about that acoustic version (which may have been from a live in-studio appearance, but I don't recall).
