Sugar Minott spent his youth hanging around the legendary "Studio 1" listening to the artists that recorded there, such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, The Heptones, Dennis Brown and others.
Sugar began his career with the formation of the African Brothers, along with Tony Tuff and Derek Howard (and later Triston Palmer) in the early 1970s. The African Brothers were a harmonious roots act, of which Sugar became the most popular member. By 1979, Sugar had been invited by Studio 1 to record a solo album.
When recording at Studio 1, he chose not to use a backing band as in conventional recording, but elected to sing over instrumental versions of old Studio 1 classics. This is considered to be the birth of "dancehall," which lead to countless artists making new hits out of old classics, a tradition that continues in Jamaica today.
Sugar was also well-regarded for hard work on his Youthman Promotion sound system and Black Roots & Youthman Promotion labels into the 1980s, which brought forth such artists as Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty, Yami Bolo, Junior Reid, Tony Rebel, Garnett Silk, and many more to the industry. Up until his death, he was still working with young artists both in Jamaica and the US, including his daughter Pashon Minott.

Why, oh why?
Ooohhhoohuhuhuhoo
Show me that you love me girl
Show me that you need me girl
Show me that you want me girl
Why wonβ²t you show me that you care?
Trying vain things, vain things
That brings no love within
But if you really check me girl
Your love is all I waaaa'ant
If you really ask me girl
Your love is all I neeeeβ²eed
So, show me that you love me girl
Show me that you want me girl
Show me that you need me girl
Why won't you show me that you care?
Though you speak, with the tongues of angels
And might have, the gift of prophecy
If you have not love, you have nothing at all
If you have not love, you're like the sounding brass
And the tinkling cymbal, oh yesss,... so...
Show me that you love me girl
Show me that you want me girl
Show me that you need me girl
Why wonβ²t you show me that you care?
Ahhhhh,... ohhhh
Oh why, oh why?
Uuhhhhahhuh
Youβ²ve got to show me, to show meee
For if you have great knowledge
It shall vanish away
If you have prophecy
It shall cease
But looove,... never fade away
No, loooove, never never fade
So show me that you love me girl
Why won't you show me that you want me girl?
Show me that you need me girl
Why wonβ²t you show me that you care?
Alright,... ahhhhhuhuh
Aahhhhoooohhhh
Why, oh whyyyyy?
Yeah, show me, ah show me, ah show me,
Ah show me, ah show me, ah show meeeee... yeah
Why won't you gimme, ah gimme,
Ah gimme, ah gimme, ah gimmeeeeee...
The song "Show Me That You Love Me Girl" by Sugar Minott is a reggae love song about a man pleading with his lover to show her love and affection for him. The song starts with the singer questioning why his lover hasn't been showing him love and asking her to prove her love for him. The lyrics then go on to say that the things she's doing to try to prove her love aren't working and that he just wants her to show him love and care.
The second verse of the song takes on a spiritual dimension, with the singer referencing biblical verse 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. This verse talks about the importance of love, even above spiritual gifts such as prophecy and knowledge. The song suggests that without love, these spiritual gifts are meaningless. The song then concludes with the singer once again pleading with his lover to show him love and affection.
Overall, "Show Me That You Love Me Girl" is a heartfelt plea for love and affection in a relationship. It suggests that even spiritual gifts and knowledge are meaningless without love and that love is the most important thing in a relationship.
