Sugar Minott spent his youth hanging around the legendary "Studio 1" listening to the artists that recorded there, such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, The Heptones, Dennis Brown and others.
Sugar began his career with the formation of the African Brothers, along with Tony Tuff and Derek Howard (and later Triston Palmer) in the early 1970s. The African Brothers were a harmonious roots act, of which Sugar became the most popular member. By 1979, Sugar had been invited by Studio 1 to record a solo album.
When recording at Studio 1, he chose not to use a backing band as in conventional recording, but elected to sing over instrumental versions of old Studio 1 classics. This is considered to be the birth of "dancehall," which lead to countless artists making new hits out of old classics, a tradition that continues in Jamaica today.
Sugar was also well-regarded for hard work on his Youthman Promotion sound system and Black Roots & Youthman Promotion labels into the 1980s, which brought forth such artists as Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty, Yami Bolo, Junior Reid, Tony Rebel, Garnett Silk, and many more to the industry. Up until his death, he was still working with young artists both in Jamaica and the US, including his daughter Pashon Minott.
Think It Over

Those warm and those cold days
We used to share
Yes, we had good times
And there were bad times
But we carried through
I can′t explain the way that I feel
Why should we have to part
So before you go...
Pleasure and laughter
And sometimes disaster
But we shared it all
We faced oppositions
Made many decisions
In love
But now you wanna walk out on me
I can't explain the way that I feel
Why should we have to part
So before you go...
Think it over (over)
Before you go-oh-oh
Think it over
(Think it over)
Take a little time
Remember those old days
We had always
No matter what the people said
Out on the bread line
Even at my price
You would wait for me
But now you wanna walk out on me
I can′t explain the way that I feel
Why should we have to part
So before you go...
Think it over
Before you go-oh-oh
Think it over
Oh yeah
Think it over, over
Sit right down, sit right down
And think it over, over
You might just be making
A silly mistake
Think it over
And over
Before you go
Think it over
In the song "Think It Over" by Sugar Minott, the lyrics reflect on a past relationship and the emotions surrounding its potential end. The singer reminisces about the good and bad times shared with their partner and urges them to reconsider their decision to walk away. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and desperation as the singer grapples with their feelings and tries to understand why they need to part ways.
The opening lines, "Remember those old days, Those warm and those cold days, We used to share," emphasize the nostalgia and the bond that once existed between the lovers. The lyrics acknowledge that the relationship had its ups and downs but emphasizes the resilience and determination to overcome challenges together.
The repetition of the line "Think it over before you go" throughout the song serves as a plea for the partner to carefully consider their decision. The singer cannot explain their intense emotions and questions why the relationship has to come to an end. They implore their partner to take time to reflect on what they could be leaving behind and advises against making a hasty decision that they may regret.
