water
Sugarcube Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wait for me underneath the water
Wait for me I have to go now
Into the big city
She pulls me firmly towards her
Wait for me underneath the water
Wait for me here
You'll be fine underneath the water
I'll be back early next summer
We met again at the lake
After all these years,
You said "want a drink?"
I love you
And you know I will be back
Hold your breath
And nestle into the ice
Wait for me underneath the water
Wait for me and count to ten
You'll look up and I will be there
Wait for me
The lake was frozen,
You took me for a walk over the ice,
I cracked
The ice cracked
I fell into the lake
I watched you through the eyes
Love into you
Wait for me underneath the water
Wait for me and sing along
"She's coming, coming, coming"
Wait for me
I watched you through the ice
I expected you to crawl for help
I smiled, you just stood there

I tried to kiss you through the ice,
You just walked away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sugarcube's song "Water" tell a story of a man who is torn between leaving his lover behind in the countryside to venture into the big city, promising to return early next summer. He urges her to wait for him underneath the water, where he will be able to find her upon his return. When they meet again at the lake after years of separation, he confesses his love for her, prompting her to wait for him and count to ten, reassuring her that he will always come back to her.

The latter half of the song takes a darker turn when the man falls through the ice and watches his lover through the water while she stands on the surface. At this point, he realizes that his lover might not feel the same way towards him as he affirms his love for her, realizing through her lack of reaction that she is unable to reciprocate his feelings. Despite attempting to kiss her through the ice as a final plea, he is ultimately left alone, watching her walk away.

In this song, Sugarcube explores themes of love, separation, and the inevitable consequences of chasing after one's desires. It is unclear whether the singer achieves his aspirations, but his love is no longer requited, and he is alone, beneath the water.

@Sergio alexandre Sousa Wouldn't say unmatched. Listen to Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins. But yeah, on this track Bjork is excellent!

Such vocal power

Matt Harrison

I wish bjork fans could get over the fact this is a band, completely different from her solo albums, and worthy of respect - all aspects of it. Some of us prefer this to her solo work by leaps and bounds.

Nicholas Norway - Guitar

Youre saying Bjork fans don't respect this?

Matt Harrison

@Nicholas Norway - Guitar scroll down. Bjork this, bjork that, anything but her songs suck, etc. Go to another sugarcubes song or album, same comments. Seems pretty disrespectful to me
