The Sugarplum Fairies draw influence from French cultural icons such as Françoise Hardy, Anna Karina, and Jean-Luc Godard, as well as the Velvet Underground, John Lennon, and Lee Hazlewood. Frequently mentioned as a point of comparison by critics, Mazzy Star, a similarly styled female-singer, male-guitarist duo from the 1990s, are also cited as an influence.
Sugarplum Fairiesâ upcoming release âChinese Leftoversâ veers from sleepy shoegaze pop to bouncy D.I.Y. indie rock, all with a subtle infusion of country-noir and the occasional hint of eclectic Vaudeville.
For âChinese Leftoversâ Sugarplum Fairies have teamed up with Joey Waronker (Beck, REM) on drums, Gus Seyffert (The Bird And The Bee, Sia) on bass, Jebin Bruni (P.I.L., Aimee Mann) on keyboards and Martin Tillman (Dark Knight, Rickie Lee Jones) on cello.
The CD was mixed by Todd Burke (Belle & Sebastian, Ben Harper) and mastered by 3 time Grammy winner Gavin Lurssen (T Bone Burnett).
ABC featured the song âHold On To Meâ on the season finale episode of âGreyâs Anatomyâ on May 14.

First love
Sugarplum Fairies Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Starring Jules against Jim and a girl
Who is torn in between
needless to say life's a whore
Teasing two boys in corduroys
And I try to get by
Who's the fool
Right now I am
In between sheets we repeat
Our first love, last rites
truthful all endings are bad
Because otherwise they just won't end
Quoting Jules versus Jim
when all of your prior restrictions
Have turned into brand new addictions
Will you know to let go
who's leaving whom
Who's the fool
Right now I am
In between sheets we repeat
Our first love, last rites
The song "First Love Last Rites" by Sugarplum Fairies talks about a war being waged between two boys, Jules and Jim, over a girl who is torn between them. The lyrics speak to the complexity of love and relationships, as the singer navigates the challenges of being in love with two people at once. The lyrics use war as a metaphor for the struggle the singer is facing between choosing one over the other.
The second verse speaks to the idea that life can be unpredictable and chaotic, teasing us with its uncertainties. The lyrics also suggest that love can become addictive, and that we must learn to let go of past attachments in order to move on.
The chorus repeats the question "who's leaving whom, who's the fool," suggesting that the singer is unsure of where they stand in the relationships. The final line, "in between sheets we repeat our first love, last rites" speaks to the idea of repeating past patterns and the struggle to move on from a first love.
Overall, the song explores the themes of love, addiction, and the difficulty of navigating complicated relationships.
