Soul Hunter kind of gave me Suikoden vibes as well (not sure if i ever finished it) but the plot kind of reminds me of Suikoden 1 "An evil sorceress bewitched an Emperor of a powerful Dynasty". The main character I believe went around recruiting as well if i remember correctly.

.hack//Roots is the only anime that I can think of that is relevant to the story of a video games series as it served as the prologue for .hack//GU and helped flesh out the world that the game takes place in. I think the Suikogaidens would've helped serve the series better as either a novel or an anime because in visual novels, everything is already imagined for you rather than having the reader be more involved in the creative process. Plus, visual novels have less appeal to the western markets, which is probably why it never made it to their game stores and didn't make ground for expanding the fanbase outside of Japan. If you were to recommend either Record of Grancrest War or The Heroic Legend of Arslan, which one would you pick?

I've never actually watched Arslan myself, just had it recommended as an anime fans of Suikoden would enjoy, but I would wholeheartedly recommend watching Grancrest War.

The whole of the .hack series is a giant media-mix, and whilst Roots was pretty much a prequel anime to .hack//GU, I feel that in terms of what you're on about, .hack//SIGN worked better as an introduction to that world, with the Liminality special episodes that accompanied the games help not only flesh out the world, but let you see another side to the games.

I'm not surprised we never got the gaidens over here. We struggled to actually get the games themselves at times (especially over here in Europe) but one of these days I'll buy a copy and download the translation patch. Who knows, I may even play them here when I do!
