It's better when you're sad
I don't like it when you're near me
I don't like it when you're gone
Nothing left to live for
Understand me
The lyrics to Sulpher's song Misery delve into the dark theme of finding pleasure in someone's sadness and misery. The first line, "Don't like it when you're happy, it's better when you're sad," portrays the idea that the singer in the song only derives joy from seeing their loved one in a state of sadness rather than happiness. The following lines, "I don't like it when you're near me, I don't like it when you're gone," further emphasize the singer's unexplainable feelings towards their loved one. The singer seems to be caught in a dichotomy; they crave their loved one's presence and despise it at the same time.
The final line of the song, "Nothing left to live for, understand me," could indicate that the singer has reached a level of despair and hopelessness, and their only relief is from seeing their loved one suffer. This could be interpreted as a form of emotional manipulation, which is a toxic dynamic in any relationship.
