Thanks for Nothing
Sum 41 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll never take part in the grown population
Or waste my time with further education
To get what we know, is just a big show
Where they want to control
So chained and frustrated
It's all so complicated
Fashion, no passion surrounds me
All I know is I've heard this all before
Reality's a bore (is a bore)
You ask me to believe it (never believe)
Something they provide
Can't bring myself to, do what
You want me to (want me to)
This is who we are and (who we are)
nothing's gonna change, nothing's gonna change

I can't take part in the business revolution
Or take my chance in the real world confusion
Don't blame us, who do we trust when they're so dis-a-honest
No patience, this nation's obsessed with exploitation
Lying, denying surrounds me

All I know is I've heard this all before
Reality's a bore (is a bore)
You ask me to believe it (never believe)
Something they provide
Can't bring myself to, do what
You want me to (want me to)
This is who we are and (who we are)
Nothing's gonna change

(what!) Don't think you can ignore us (ignore us)
Don't tell me your word is right (word is right)
Don't pick a future for us (for us)
We lack 'cause we're involved!!

All I know is I've heard this all before
Reality's a bore (is a bore)
You ask me to believe it (never believe)
Something they provide
Can't bring myself to, do what
You want me to (want me to)
This is who we are and (who we are)
Nothing's gonna change

Thanks for nothing (I've heard this all before),
Thanks for nothing (reality's a bore),

Thanks for nothing (it'll never be the same),
Thanks for nothing (and nothing's gonna change)

Overall Meaning

The song "Thanks For Nothing" by Sum 41 is a commentary on the frustrations and disillusionment of young people in society. The lyrics express the singer's rejection of conventional expectations, like pursuing education and participating in the business world, as these establishments are seen as controlling and disingenuous. The repetition of the phrase "All I know is I've heard this all before, reality's a bore" emphasizes the singer's disillusionment and the cyclical nature of society's expectations. The lyrics also criticize the media and fashion industries for perpetuating empty trends without passion.

The anger and frustration in the song culminate in the chorus, where the singer rejects the idea of being told what to do by those in power. The line "We lack 'cause we're involved!!" suggests that young people want to be involved in making changes, but feel neglected and ignored by those in positions of power. The song ends on an ambiguous note, with the repeated phrase "Thanks for nothing" seemingly a resigned and bitter conclusion to the singer's frustrations.

This was my second pop punk album (after Good Charlotte) when I was 11. My parents saw the parental advisory sign and tried to take it away from me because of the "swearing" so I hid it.
Hiding in my room and turning this up was my therapy against my abusive parents.
This song means so much to me.
