First Love
Sunderland Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can't believe I've done it again
I let you go back there to what had to end
Has anything changed
Has he been a friend
You need to take a step back, step back
Cuz the first love is the worst one you ever had

Tell me I'm mistaken for I'm losing it in this state
Take a look back, revisit
All the things you said
When you came to me and took my heart instead
Don't want you to be that girl again
The one who was crying on my bed
Your heart in two, he was breaking you down, down
He was breaking you down

You couldn't breathe, gasping for air
Your tears on my shoulder, you were pulling me in
Has anything changed
Has he been a friend
You need to take a step back, step back
Cuz the first love is the worst one you ever had

Tell me I'm mistaken for I'm losing it in this state
Take a look back, revisit
All the things you said
When you came to me and took my heart instead
Don't want you to be that girl again
The one who was crying on my bed
Your heart in two, he was breaking you down, down
He was breaking you down

Has anything changed
Has anything changed
Has anything changed

Don't want you to be that girl again
The one who was crying on my bed
Your heart in two, he was breaking you down, down
He was breaking you down

I'm not gonna be that guy again
The one who let you cry on my bed

He's yours to lose, he was breaking you down, down
He was breaking you down

Overall Meaning

In "First Love," Sunderland sings about getting back together with an old flame who had previously broken her heart. She questions whether anything has changed, whether he is now a friend to her, and whether he is worth the risk of getting hurt again. She warns him to take a step back and reconsider whether the first love is worth trying again. Sunderland is empathetic towards her partner's situation, but she also worries about being hurt once more, and she doesn't want to go down the same path again.

The lyrics go on to describe what appears to be an emotional and intense encounter between Sunderland and her ex. She remembers how he broke her heart, how she tried to comfort him in his time of need, and how she doesn't want to go through the same pain again. The chorus summarizes her feelings, with Sunderland warning her ex that their first love was the worst one they've ever had. The song ends with Sunderland promising not to be the guy who lets her cry on his bed and tells her ex that he is hers to lose.
