Currently she is one of the top playback singers in Bollywood - having sung for top actresses such as: Rekha, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Karisma Kapoor, Kajol, Urmila Matondkar, Rani Mukherji, Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita Sen, Kareena Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Lara Dutta, Vidya Balan, Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Asin, Anushka Sharma, Sonakshi Sinha, Parineeti Chopra and Alia Bhatt.
She started her singing career at a very early age of four. She participated in many competitions and made her presence felt. Her family soon shifted to Mumbai when Tabassum, a TV host spotted her talent and expressed to her parents that she could further her career if they went to Mumbai. She became quite famous through the various competitions she participated in. Her performances were telecast all over India through the National Television channel Doordarshan, through the music show Meri Aawaz Suno where she won the "Lata Mangeshkar Trophy" for the best female singer of India along with Pradip Somasundaran in the male category. This was the first such televised contest in India in 1996. Her first break in a Hindi film was in the film Shastra followed by Gang, Veergati, Dahek, Bade Dilwala, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, Shyam Benegal's Samar and the Vidhu Vinod Chopra film Mission Kashmir. She had no formal training before she entered into various national singing competitions. Lata Mangeshkar offered to train her when she won on the nationally-telecast "Meri Aawaz Suno"
Her singing career got a big boost when Sandeep Chowta gave her the first major break in Mast. After Mast there was no turning back. Sunidhi Chauhan had been getting lots of criticism for an extremely mature voice despite being young. However this criticism ended once Chameli came with her biggest song to date "Bhaage Re Mann" and today she and Nihira Joshi are known as the most versatile singers since Kavita Krishnamurthy and Asha Bhosle.

Khwabon ki gali mein tu yaad ban ke kho na jana
Hichki hichki hichak hichki ho na jana
Khwabon ki gali mein tu yaad ban ke kho na jana
Hichki hichki hichak hichki ho na jana
Khwabon ki gali mein tu yaad ban ke kho na jana
Hichak hichki ka aana jana
Kisi ki hichki hai kisi ki siski hai
Siskiyon ki bheed mein tu kho na jana
Hichki hichki hichak hichki ho na jana
Jo hai pataa wo na bataa
Raaz chupaane mein hai sacha mazaa
Kehna hai jo keh dogey na
Baatein banane ko hai kuch na bachaa
Basti hoon main kyunki maine kabhi kuch na kahaa
Baaton hi mein baaton se tu baaton ko na badhaa
Hothon ki baatein kabhi honthon se jaae nahi honthon pe rehne do na ja
Hichki hichki hichak hichki ho na jana
Khwabon ki gali mein tu yaad ban ke kho na jana
Hichki hichki hichak hichki ho na jana
Khwabon ki gali mein tu yaad ban ke kho na jana
Jaane do na jeene do na jeene se roko nahi jaane do na
Jaane na woh jaanega toh jiyega aise jaise koi sazaa
Hasta hai woh kyunki tune abhi kuch na kaha
Baaton hi mein baaton se tu baaton ko na badhaa
Honthon ki baatein kabhi honthon se jaaye nahi hothon pe rehne de na ja
Hichki hichki hichak hichki ho na jana
Khwabon ki gali mein tu yaad ban ke kho na jana
Hichki hichki hichak hichki ho na jana
Khwabon ki gali mein tu yaad ban ke kho na jana
Hichak hichki ka aana jana sisak siski ka tana bana
Kisi ki hichki hai kisi ki siski hai siskiyon ki bheed mein tu kho na jana
Hichki hichki hichak hichki ho na jana
The song Hichki Hichki by Sunidhi Chauhan explores the idea of suppressing one's emotions and desires. The lyrics, "Jo hai pataa wo na bataa, raaz chupaane mein hai sacha mazaa" (It's more fun to keep secrets rather than share), suggest that keeping emotions and secrets hidden is seen as more enjoyable than being vulnerable and exposing oneself to judgment. The mention of "hichki" and "siski" throughout the song represent the sounds of someone trying to hold back their emotions or tears.
The line "Baaton hi mein baaton se tu baaton ko na badhaa" (Don't complicate things by adding more words) warns about the dangers of overthinking or overanalyzing situations. The lyrics encourage the listener to just let go and allow themselves to feel and express their emotions. This message is emphasized in the lines "Jaane do na jeene do na, jeene se roko nahi jaane do na" (Don't stop living or feeling, just let it be).
Overall, the song encourages the listener to let go of their inhibitions and express themselves freely in order to live life to the fullest.
