C'est La Vie
Sunny Gale Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(C'est la vie)
(C'est la vie)
(C'est la vie)
(C'est la vie)

John's in love with Joan
Joan's in love with Jim
Jim's in love with someone who's
Not in love with him.
What was meant to be
Mocked him

C'est la vie
C'est la vie
(C'est la vie)
(C'est la vie)

Life's a funny thing
When it comes to love.
You don't always conquer
The one you're dreamin' of.

As they say in old Paris,
C'est la vie
C'est la vie
(C'est la vie)
(C'est la vie)
(C'est la vie)

Those who fall in love agree
It's the unsolved mystery.
If your big romance cannot see
You'll find someone who?

(C'est la vie)
(C'est la vie)

But there's those?
Here's the reason why
She just found a sweetheart
But no one's gonna cry.

Though she stole his love from me
C'est la vie
C'est la vie

Though she stole his love from me
C'est la vie
C'est la vie

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sunny Gale's song "C'est La Vie" talk about love and its funny nature. The first verse talks about three people, John, Joan, and Jim. John is in love with Joan, Joan is in love with Jim, but Jim is in love with someone who does not love him back. The lyrics imply that Jim's situation is one of many situations in love that were not meant to be, and that's just the way it is ("C'est la vie" meaning "that's life" in French). The chorus repeats this sentiment, mentioning that life is unpredictable when it comes to love, and you don't always end up with the one you're dreaming of.

The second verse continues the theme, saying that falling in love is an unsolved mystery, and if your big romance cannot see your worth, there will be someone else (signaled by the "you'll find someone who?" line). The last verse brings back the characters from the first verse, with a new situation where one person (possibly the singer) has lost their love to someone else who just found a sweetheart, but no one is crying about it since that's just the way life is ("C'est la vie").

Overall, the lyrics of "C'est La Vie" convey a message of acceptance and resignation towards love and its unpredictable ways, suggesting life goes on even when we don't get what or who we want.

This lovely lady had an abundance of talent. She could sing most other singers under the table. Its a mystery to me why she didn't get properly promoted by her record label. She would have been a massive recording star. Shame on the record company. Sunny's music lives on thanks to YouTube.

My favorite version of this song. I also liked theDeJohn sisters version.

A great song. Sarah Vaughan had a brilliant record with it. And big hit. But Sunny's version is every bit as outstanding as Sarah's, the difference between Mercury put much money in for promotion on each and every Vaughan release and Sunny got very limited attention from her labels.
