The Johannesburg-based indie three piece formed in 1998 on Sunways Farm, outside of Richards Bay. By the end of that year, they released the critically acclaimed EP No More Heavy, which went on to receive two SAMA (South African Music Awards) nominations. The band's debut full-length album, The Moon is a Spoon, was released in April 2001 and in March 2002 the album won the prestigious SAMA award for the Best Rock Album of the year. Both albums have received excellent radioplay on South African radio stations, including a number of top ten hits on national, campus and regional stations. The band have released three music videos, one of which recently received the www.sasounds.com award for Best Music Video of the year along with the album which took Best Album honours.
Sunways have toured countrywide, both clubs and all the major South African festivals (Oppikoppi, Woodstock, Splashy Fen, Southern Cross Fest, Awesome Africa Fest, State of the Nation, Easter Rock Fest, etc.) , and towards the end of last year embarked on their first overseas tour. The tour comprised of a show in England and 17 dates in Northern Ireland, all of which were exceptionally well-received.
The band are returning to the UK early in 2003 to play shows in the Midlands, Yorkshire, London, Scotland, Ireland, N.Ireland & Holland, armed with a brand new album entitled Three. Three will be released at the end of October 2002 as the first release through Sunways' new indie company called Big Yellow House Music, and distributed by the highly successful Sheer Music Group.
