Golden Retriever
Super Furry Animals Lyrics

Hey said the devil
When I met her at the roundabout
She's got powers
Magnetic devours you of everything you've got

She's a golden retriever
Retrieves your oldest coin
Leads you blindly down every dark alley
Then she'll bleed you dry

Stop! Said the puppy
When I met him at the zebra cross
She said "You need protection
From every direction
But she'll get you anyhow"

She's a golden retriever
Retrieves your oldest coin
Leads you blindly down every dark alley
Then she'll bleed you dry

She's a golden retriever
She's a golden retriever
Golden retriever
Golden retriever
Golden retriever
Golden retriever

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Super Furry Animals' song "Golden Retriever" portray a femme fatale who seduces men and devours everything they have. The devil in the first verse warns about the magnetic powers of this woman and how she can take everything away from someone. However, the second verse introduces a different perspective as a puppy warns about the woman's tricks and advises that even if someone protects themselves, they will still fall victim to her. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the point that this woman, like a golden retriever, deceives and takes away everything from those she preys on.

The lyrics suggest that this song is about the manipulative and deceitful nature of humans. The golden retriever symbolizes how people can pretend to be loyal and friendly but can turn on someone in an instant. The roundabout and the zebra cross mentioned in the song are street crossings that represent the different paths people take in life. The woman in the song leads people down dark alleys that represent the troubled parts of life from which it is difficult to escape. Overall, the song is a commentary on human nature and how people are often not what they seem.
