The Dream
Supernatural Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every time that I look in the mirror
All these lines in my face gettin' clearer
The past is gone
It went by like dusk to dawn
Isn't that the way
Everybody's got their dues in life to pay

Yeah, I know nobody knows
Where it comes and where it goes
I know it's everybody's sin
You got to lose to know how to win

Half my life's in books' written pages
Live and learn from fools and from sages
You know it's true
All the things
Come back to you
Sing with me

Sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing it with me
If it's just for today

Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
Well, sing with me
Sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear

Sing it with me
If it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
Dream On, Dream On, Dream On
Dream Yourself A Dream Come True
Dream On, Dream On, Dream On
Dream Until Your Dream Comes True
Dream On, Dream On, Dream On, Dream On
Dream On, Dream On, Dream On,
Ahh
Sing with me
Sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing it with me
If it's just for today

Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away
Sing with me
Sing for the year
Sing for the laughter and sing for the tear
Sing it with me

If it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

so let's take a look back throughout the years of travel and transformations of Dean

has near death experience [comes back]
sells his soul then killed
goes to hell [ stays 40 years hell time]
resurrected numerous times due to dying in various situations between season 4 and 5
becomes family man
becomes a suicidal drunk then a vampire then back into a human that's completely intolerant of monster
becomes depressed for a small period then goes to purgatory
comes back with survival of fittest attitude with a small tolerance for monsters
becomes lonely again then gains powers from kain blade
suffer effects from kain blade then killed
now he's a demon

did i miss anything?

Seriously... how does Jensen not have a bunch of awards at home for playing Dean Winchester? This scene (as many others) never fails to make me watch in open-mouthed awe at his amazing skill and talent.
It also never fails to make me cry ;-;

MelissaSz89 he should’ve played max payne I mean put them next to eachother he looks exactly the same as max Payne from the video game, Jensen doesn’t get the credit he deserves and it sucks.

"Who wasn't there for Sam, I always was! It wasn't fair! I didn't deserve what he put on me and I don't deserve to go to Hell!" omg I'm dying.

Once Dean opened his eyes, I immediately thought of this scene word for word...

It wasn't a prophecy. It was a warning of what would happen to him in hell. The thing is, she wasn't expecting Dean to be saved by angels storming hell & busting his soul free and resurrecting him.

In fact, before Kripke's 5 year plan where the series was to end in Swan Song, the original plan was for 3 seasons where Dean at the end of season 3 would go to hell as he died and stay there for all eternity as the series ended, where in time he would become a demon. But that changed when he thought it would be a cool idea to bring in angels, so it was the show's first extension.

What happened at the end of season 9 had nothing to do with this. This was just Dean's nightmare of what he would become if nothing were to save him from hell. And the show's canon until the Mark of Cain plot contradicted it was that human souls became demons through many years of torture. The MoC plot was just a cheap way to turn Dean into a demon & bypass the torture and had nothing to do with this or what Ruby told him, which is what led to this nightmare. Kripke never had anything like the MoC planned, so the fact that demon had black eyes in season 9 was just a coincidence. If anything, the writers probably looked back at this episode and thought making him a demon would be cool and came up with a lazy way to do it.

I hope this doesn't cause the real person who should become a demon to not become one anymore because of it being deemed redundant. And that person is Adam. There's no way in hell (pun not intended) Adam should be shown to be unscathed by Michael when we next see him. He & Michael have been trapped in the cage for a period of 960-1200 Earth years given how long they've been there (8-10 years of time have passed by since the events of Swan Song in Supernatural's main Earth). Michael would be very angry how he was the dutiful son and ended up getting trapped just like Lucifer yet being left to rot in there even longer while his brother was freed. And he would have nobody else to take it out on other than Adam who should be Michael's first demon. If Michael is still in Adam's body (if Adam's body wasn't destroyed & resurrected like Sam's) and Michael tortured Adam's soul within his own body while denying him the healing powers of Michael's own archangel grace, then it would mean that Adam unlike any other demon could be a holy demon perhaps infused with some of Michael's own grace which would make him more powerful than any demon ever created. So I hope a demon Adam, who absolutely needs to happen, is not shelved because of the lame demon Dean plot they did in season 10 because there's no more appropriate way to end the final season of the series than having a demonic Adam who serves Michael be released with the Winchesters facing up to their biggest failure to their #1 loyalty---their own family. Neglecting Adam for as long as they did and having let him become a demon at the hands of Michael would be the biggest sin Sam & Dean ever committed given how family is the #1 element of Supernatural and there's no better way of ending the series by having them face their biggest failure and save Adam at the cost of their own lives. And the season could parallel the lives of Michael & Adam as the forgotten sons/brothers of their respective families as Kripke did with Sam & Dean paralleling Lucifer's & Michael's roles in season 5.

In season 3, they gave us a prophecy. Ruby gave Dean a 'prophecy'. And at the end of season 9....that prophecy finally came true.

Erik Oleson

Same. It was a long time coming but it seems it was inevitable.
