Even In The Quietest Moments
Supertramp Lyrics

Even in the quietest moments
I wish I knew what I had to do
And even though the sun is shining
Well I feel the rain, here it comes again, dear
And even when you showed me
My heart was out of tune
For there's a shadow of doubt that's not letting me find you too soon
The music that you gave me
The language of my soul
Oh Lord, I want to be with you.
Won't you let me come in from the cold?

Don't you let the sun fade away
Don't you let the sun fade away
Don't you let the sun be leaving
Won't you come to me soon

And even though the stars are listening
And the ocean's deep, I just go to sleep
And then I create a silent movie
You become the star, is that what you are, dear?
Your whisper tells a secret
Your laughter brings me joy
And a wonder of feeling I'm nature's own little boy
But still the tears keep falling
They're raining from the sky
Well there's a lot of me got to go under before I get high

Don't you let the sun disappear
Don't you let the sun disappear
Don't you let the sun be leaving
No, you can't be leaving my life
Say that you won't be leaving my life
Say that you won't be leaving my life
Say won't you please, stay won't you please
Say won't you please, stay won't you please
Lord, won't you come and get into my life
Lord, won't you come and get into my life
Say won't you please, stay won't you please
Say won't you please, stay won't you please
Lord, don't go

And even when the song is over
Where have I been, was it just a dream?

And though your door is always open
Where do I begin, may I please come in, dear?

Overall Meaning

In Supertramp's "Even in the Quietest Moments," the lyrics describe a search for meaning and purpose in life. The singer expresses a sense of uncertainty and doubt, noting that even when everything seems to be going well ("even though the sun is shining"), they can't shake a feeling of inner turmoil ("I feel the rain, here it comes again, dear").

The lyrics touch on themes like love, spirituality, and the search for connection, with the singer asking for guidance from a higher power ("Oh Lord, I want to be with you") and seeking reassurance from a loved one ("Say that you won't be leaving my life"). The music itself is quiet and introspective, with a gentle piano and acoustic guitar underscoring the singer's vulnerable vocals.

Overall, the song seems to be about the human experience of grappling with uncertainty and longing for clarity and connection. It acknowledges that even in the quietest moments, we can feel lost and disconnected, but suggests that by remaining open and vulnerable, we can find our way back to a sense of peace and purpose.

Line by Line Meaning

Even in the quietest moments
During times when everything is calm and silent,

I wish I knew what I had to do
I wish I had clarity and direction,

And even though the sun is shining
Despite things looking positive,

Well I feel the rain, here it comes again, dear
I still sense sadness and problems lurking nearby,

And even when you showed me
Despite you showing me the way,

My heart was out of tune
I was unable to synchronize my emotions,

For there's a shadow of doubt that's not letting me find you too soon
My uncertainties are keeping me from connecting with you too early,

The music that you gave me
The lessons that you taught me,

The language of my soul
The way I express myself deeply,

Oh Lord, I want to be with you.
I yearn to have a closer relationship with you,

Won't you let me come in from the cold?
Please accept and welcome me into your life,

Don't you let the sun fade away
Don't allow happiness and light to disappear,

Don't you let the sun be leaving
Don't let positive things slip away,

Won't you come to me soon
Please come to me quickly,

And even though the stars are listening
Despite feeling insignificant compared to the vast universe,

And the ocean's deep, I just go to sleep
I am overwhelmed and can only escape into slumber,

And then I create a silent movie
And dream up a story without dialogues,

You become the star, is that what you are, dear?
And you are the main character; is that what you represent in my life?

Your whisper tells a secret
Your soothing voice reveals something private,

Your laughter brings me joy
Your happiness makes me happy too,

And a wonder of feeling I'm nature's own little boy
And I feel curious and amazed, like a child of Mother Nature,

But still the tears keep falling
But I can't help but cry,

They're raining from the sky
The tears are flowing freely,

Well there's a lot of me got to go under before I get high
I still have to overcome many obstacles before I can be happy,

No, you can't be leaving my life
Please don't leave me,

Say that you won't be leaving my life
Promise me that you won't leave me,

Lord, won't you come and get into my life
Please come and be a bigger part of my life,

And even when the song is over
When everything comes to an end,

Where have I been, was it just a dream?
Where have I gone? Was everything just an illusion?

And though your door is always open
Despite you always welcoming me,

Where do I begin, may I please come in, dear?
I still don't know what to do. Can I still rely on you?

Let’s go right now:
1978
Me and my bff Tina in my new grown-up bedroom
We are 13.
It’s a beautiful spring evening in Temple City, Ca
Down the Freeway from L.A.
A sweet breeze through my window
Only candles light the room.
I put this 8 track Album on my new Christmas stereo.
We lay on the floor we have the pioneer speakers pointing at our heads.
Close your eyes …

4 months ago I lost my youngest son at the tender age of 18 . There's something within the rhythm, tune & lyrics that make me think of him . As the birds sing at the start I smile, to the relations of words with my time with him . It makes me sense that one day I will see him again. I'll never let nature's own little boy fade away or disappear.

I never understood why this single, as the title track of the album, got so little air time. I think it's one of their best.

Too deep for commercial radio..still deep almost like a meditation..i repeat these simple first few words of lyrics...few decades now! Masterpiece indeed

Six and half minute songs aren't radio friendly
