Long Way Home
Supertramp Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you think you're a Romeo
Playing a part in a picture-show
Take the long way home
Take the long way home

'Cause you're the joke of the neighborhood
Why should you care if you're feeling good
Take the long way home
Take the long way home

But there are times that you feel you're part of the scenery
All the greenery is comin' down, boy
And then your wife seems to think you're part of the furniture
Oh, it's peculiar, she used to be so nice

When lonely days turn to lonely nights
You take a trip to the city lights
And take the long way home
Take the long way home

You never see what you want to see
Forever playing to the gallery
You take the long way home
Take the long way home

And when you're up on the stage, it's so unbelievable
Oh unforgettable, how they adore you
But then your wife seems to think you're losing your sanity
Oh, calamity, is there no way out, oh yeah
Ooh, take it, take it out
Take it, take it out
Oh yeah

Does it feel that your life's become a catastrophe?
Oh, it has to be for you to grow, boy
When you look through the years and see what you could have been
Oh, what you might have been
If you'd had more time

So, when the day comes to settle down
Who's to blame if you're not around?
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
Took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home, so long
You took the long way home
You took the long way home, uh yeah
You took the long way home

Long way home
Long way home
Long way home
Long way home

Long way home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Supertramp's song Long Way Home reflect the journey of a man who is trying to find himself, but always ends up taking the long way home. The opening lines suggest that the man is pretending to be someone he is not, playing a character in a picture-show. He is aware of the perception of others, as seen when the line refers to him as the โ€œjoke of the neighborhoodโ€. However, he does not care and continues to take the long way home. The chorus repeats this idea, emphasizing that the man is not interested in taking shortcuts because he seems to find comfort in the journey itself.

As the song progresses, the manโ€™s discontentment becomes more evident. He feels disconnected from the world around him, as if he is merely a part of the scenery. The line also refers to the destruction of greenery, demonstrating that he is aware of the impact that he has on the environment. Furthermore, his wife now treats him as if he is just another piece of furniture, which is peculiar given that she had previously been kind to him.

The final verse reflects on the man's life choices, particularly when he looks through the years and sees what he could have been. The lines suggest regret, as if he has not accomplished what he should have, and that he feels there is still more to be achieved. The song finishes with the idea that the man has now settled down and is questioning the price he has paid for his journeying - he does not want to be blamed if he is not around, yet he took the long way home.

At 63 and dying of brain cancer. Now this piece doesn't sound so morbid. It sounds like an accurate telling of so many of our lives. We want, but not always get. And sometimes what's best is to take the long way home ....

Iโ€™m 53 and dying of Stage 4 Inoperable Double Lung Cancer and I LOVE this song. Death is as quick as a blink of an eye. So like I tell everyone : Death is shutter speed!!!! Iโ€™ve been dead once already. I died when I was 9 years old and was down for 45 minutes and I was allowed to come back. Iโ€™ve lived every moment like itโ€™s My last because as I learnt at age 9 โ€œNo one is promised a tomorrowโ€!!!!!

This is one of those legendary songs that you loved as a kid when you first heard it but didn't truly understand how true these lyrics really are until you are married with kids and grandkids 30 or 40 years later.
