School
Supertramp Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can see you in the morning when you go to school
Don't forget your books, you know you've got to learn the golden rule
Your teacher tells you stop your playing, get on with your work
And be like Johnnie-Too-good, don't you know he never shirks
He's coming along

After school is over, you're playing in the park
Don't be out too late, don't let it get too dark
They tell you not to hang around and learn what life's about
And grow up just like them, won't you let it work it out
And you're full of doubt

Don't do this and don't do that
What are they trying to do?
(Make a good boy of you)
And do they know where it's at?
Don't criticize, they're old and wise
Do as they tell you to
Don't want the devil to
Come and put out your eyes

Maybe I'm mistaken expecting you to fight
Or maybe I'm just crazy, I don't know wrong from right
But while I'm still living, I've just got this to say
It's always up to you if you want to be that

Want to see that, want to see that way
You're coming along

Overall Meaning

The song "School" by Supertramp is a commentary on society's expectations of young people and their education. The lyrics tell the story of a young student who is expected to conform to the rules and expectations of the school system, even if the demands seem excessive or meaningless. The song opens with a discussion of the morning routine of a typical student, emphasizing the importance of learning the "golden rule." The lyrics go on to describe the restrictions placed on the young person's life, including the admonitions not to stay out too late or to play with the wrong people.

The chorus raises the question of whether the restrictions placed on young people are actually helpful or if they simply serve to reinforce the power dynamic between adults and children. The lyrics suggest that young people are often unsure about how to navigate the world around them, and they may feel frustrated by the limits placed on them. However, the song's final lines emphasize the idea that it is up to each individual to decide their own path in life. It's a call for young people to think critically about the messages they receive from society and to make their own choices about how they want to live their lives.

Have always liked this song but kinda forgot about it over the years. What a nice surprise to hear it recently on the soundtrack of the cute 1980 film "Little Darlings!" That piano is divine🎹🎶!
