I'm a bit on the chubby side and went to the gym and one of the regulars there who was in good shape was super nice and gave me some advice on train upper body and do cardio. Said my legs where already built big so I didn't need to train them all that much. Gave me some pointers and really made my gym anxiety go down. Being a big guy and goin to the gym can be anxiety inducing. Ended up losing 60 pounds in 5 months. That dude changed my whole outlook on gyms.

"Alpha Male" is something that people don't truly know the meaning of. An Alpha Male is a leader who sets an example for others and is respected for being a high quality man. He doesn't need to flex on people because everyone just knows he's the man. Being a "tough guy" doesn't make you alpha. When I was in the USAF we had this guy who thought he was an absolute bad ass because he was a Security Forces Master Sergeant and the Krav Maga instructor. I don't condone being an ass but I can't think of a single reason to give a fuck about a guy not wearing a shirt. If it's a rule, anyone who enforces the rule should be as precise and assertive as possible about it. You could say "sir, not wearing a shirt is not allowed in the premises" and take it from there, but stupid questions like "you know where you are at?" in an agitated tone only imply there's a desire for personal confrontation, or it's a sign of emotional dysregulation at the very least

what blows my mind is people can act that way and worse. The other person can literally say nothing, get bullied and pushed around repeatedly. When they finally snap and smack the bully in the mouth, he instantly gets treated like he's the bad guy. Alot of this generation doesn't seem to get that you can't just walk around and say/do whatever you want to anyone you want. There are consequences to your actions. If you are treating someone like that and get laid out because of it, it's a well-deserved and valuable lesson. I agree that it's always less trouble for you to just walk away, and there is no need to fight simply because you know you can. But in those instances where it becomes personal, sometimes you just have to wake them up by putting them to sleep. Being as humble as you can and keeping it real at the same time is what it's all about in my opinion.

Me too, then I matured and realized me going to jail, paying court fees, doing community service hours, being on probation and potentially paying for someones hospital bills, wasn't worth any of the BS. Unless I was in a self defense situation where I could prove that the other person came at me first, then I avoid fights if i have that option to. This is what's nice about having cameras on phones now of days, that if you are ever stuck in a self defense situation you can start recording beforehand and prove you weren't the aggressor if cops get called.

@Ozzie Mandias not solely. i said an alpha male requires respect from the group it operates in. the president would be an alpha. literally, the guy has to win the hearts and minds of enough people to win the election so that he can lead them. ceo's, typically should be respectful and considerate to their employees such that the employees do what they say. even a boxing gym coach could be considered the alpha of his gym if everybody respects him and he displays good leadership qualities.

it really just depends on the particular group. if it's a group of people who fight, obviously physical dominance would matter, because having that capability will garner respect. but of course, you're going to need good people skills and have a bit of a brain on you to lead and make good decisions.

if it's for intellectual related stuff, the smartest guy who has people skills, etc. etc. would probably be the alpha.

an alpha is essentially the guy in the group who has the best skillset that the group needs, leadership qualities, and people skills such that that guy can is chosen to lead the group.

That’s the Navy for you. I loved being on ship when in the Corps, but dealing with Navy personnel when we were on aboard was avoided when possible. They were constantly suffering from inferiority complex and their insecurities were on full display, even at the senior enlisted level. It definitely got brutal and more physical when we took the boat ride home from Iraq. Being a man has nothing to do with acting tough, but by being yourself, being honest, knowing your strengths and weaknesses, and improving on the former and mastery of the latter.

I used to work out ALOT because of people always picking on me and starting fights with me. I'm alot older now and don't really feel the drive to workout anymore because well its been years since I've been in a fight. However I have been in a couple relationships since then and the reactions from my partners when I was younger to now are kinda of funny. It used to be "uh oh" to "why didn't you say anything?". Leave your pride at home and only ever fight in defense and never for pride. Stay safe my fellow brothers.

48 and still take care of myself got pulled into a preening contest with an out of line guy recently and my 18 year old Varsity Wrestler son was their. Mouthing off over nothing and we walked away. I told my son that I have too much to lose (business, family, etc.) and he said he understood. He has kids get in his face but they teach discipline and control in wrestling. So awesome seeing such maturity from my young buck. Stay strong and on your purpose.

Nope. Not backing down from a fight in front of my sons. My youngest has seen me fight a couple of times. Watched me sock a drunk off duty sheriff's deputy in his solar plexus when his loose dog attacked mine and the guy got angry because I stopped it forcefully. I'll avoid trouble, but when it's on it's on and backing down from aggression is cowardice. Men shouldn't teach boys to be cowards.

The world will tell you if you're an alpha or not. A bully is not an alpha. You don't gain true respect and trust as a leader through threats, baiting and other forms of subjugation. For me, I'll defy bullies or ignore the shit out of them. And you don't gain respect as a leader through parading around or trash-talking True dedication to a leader is not something that can be earned or given per se, but more so inspired. At least in my experience around true alpha males. The realest one was also the sweetest until he found out people were embezzling from my old workplace, then he laid down the law as a senior manager. He didn't yell, call names or anything. Just stated the law and facts. The room was silent, and mind you, this was normally a cutthroat, sink-or-swim, drama-filled place.

I remember when some guy got mad at me for not wearing a mask.... IN A GYM. If this was a hospital or some place where people had no choice, I'll wear one. Dude tried to fight me OVER A MASK, yelling at me an inch away from my unmasked face. He headbutt me and finally realize he's serious.... picked up off the ground, slammed him, and held him down until he stopped squirming. Got off him when he calmed down and apologized for ruining his workout but not slamming him. Later I found out he was so confident in trying to bait me into a fight because he did Muay Thai... only part that didn't work out was I used to wrestle in high school. 😉

Used to work as a bouncer back in college. It thought me a lot of things what it means to be "tough".

If you can solve the issue in a civil matter, do it.

The pay isn't worth it when you get stabbed or get sued by the person/people who physically assaulted.

In my experience you pick up absolutely 0 women by acting aggressive. If you meet them both and make them laugh and seem genuinely interested in just having a good time. Thats when you've got their attention. Doesnt mean you'll pick them up still cause there's a lot of factors involved in that, but it does mean you have their attention.

I used to train w/a true gentleman, Jim Lem (RIP, good sir) who competed in powerlifting well into his 60s (squatting over 600 @ 181lbs at age ~64). One day some knucklehead on the bench next to me was yelling while he forced the last reps of bicep curls, then shouted "F!" and dropped the dumbbells hard. Dude came in to the gym with his gf, wanting to get into shape. he racks up into the rack next to me to do some squats. He is doing it all wrong, but I wait until his girl leaves, give him some advice, check his form to make sure he gets it, and done before his girl comes back. Then I racked up and went super light so I didn't show off in front of the new guy and his girl.
A year later he is still at it, in great shape and still with his girl.
A big guy doesn't need to flex until he has to.
