FIGHT
Surf Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hard cover books and silver frames
Because they're gone we drink your parents' bar
Three am not many cars
We go walking down the avenue doing
Anything that makes us laugh
Do it but it's a stupid thing to do

I won't argue
Let the fight do the fighting
Let the right do the righting now
I can't have you even as an enemy
Not everything is allowed

You're gonna wish that it was done
You're gonna wish that you were young again
You're gonna wish that is was fun
You're gonna want to have someone again
See what lands we have become
Flight on the horizons everyday

I won't argue
Let the fight do the fighting
Let the right do the righting now
I can't have you even as an enemy
Not everything is allowed

I won't argue
Let the fight do the fighting
Let the right do the righting now
I can't have you even as an enemy
Not everything is allowed

I won't argue
Let the fight do the fighting
Let the right do the righting now

I can't have you even as an enemy
Not everything is allowed

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Surf's song "Fight" appear to describe a night of reckless abandon and youthful indiscretion. The opening lines set the scene with references to hardcover books and silver frames, which perhaps suggest the trappings of a bourgeois upbringing. However, the absence of the singer's parents leads to the group drinking at their bar while the rest of the world sleeps. The empty streets underscore the sense of uninhibited freedom that the singer and their companions feel as they saunter aimlessly down the avenue "doing anything that makes us laugh".

Despite the joyful tone of the opening verses, the chorus signals a hint of trouble. The singer refrains from arguing and instead urges that the fight do the fighting, and that the right do the righting. The sense of danger is palpable, as if the singer and their friends are careening toward something they can't control. The repeated refrain "not everything is allowed" suggests that there are limits to this youthful rebellion, and that there may be serious consequences.

The final verse continues to reinforce a sense of impending doom. The singer warns that their actions will lead to regret: "you're gonna wish that it was done / you're gonna wish that you were young again / you're gonna wish that it was fun / you're gonna want to have someone again". The phrase "see what lands we have become / flight on the horizons every day" suggests that they are living precariously, flying by the seat of their pants without any real direction. In the end, the song seems to underscore the fleeting nature of youth, and the need to minimize regrets and to live within certain boundaries.

and shows his envy in the form of violence
better leave the surf

because that was never the vibe
better than passing this world shame

It is cool seeing it, but you shouldn't do it in a busy line up like that. There were groms out there with helmets on paddling for that wave, so there is probably rocks everywhere. It's not very safe or considerate of others. Obviously he made it, but he also could have bricked it and hit someone. Lastly, trying to punch someone in a line up is pretty pathetic looking and wrong.

@matthewjohnson2070

watching adults beat up other adults just for playing in their sand box is probably is concerning for a 17 year old entering the world lmao

@petitkus4408

go back to mommy place then, if you don't see why this asshole is dangerous for others while being a jerk, he got what he deserve. Now listen if you're being a jerk now adult, you're either going to get fucked up or risk real adult jail. Don't be a jerk and you're never going to have a problem.

@joshuab3715

Nah man. Pipeline is a scary spot. You could easily kill somebody on accident by snaking a wave. If they fall, it’s shallow, with a reef.

@timothymoynihan8063

It should be teaching you a lesson. Watch your step in this world.

@__sm1441

I’m sure that guy can throw a solid punch on land but you’re just flailing your arms no matter who you are if you try to do it sitting on a surfboard lmao. First time I’ve ever seen a punch thrown by someone laying flat on their stomach 😭😭😭

@Lycurgus224

Yeah, talk about lame-ass commentary. Were they trying to spice things up to make it go viral? Why do people feel the need to do shit like this, to exaggerate or flat out lie for clout. Just stop.
