Caught In The Game
Survivor Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You swore you'd never again, let yourself be tempted,
Too many times in the past when you've opened up your heart --
You've had it broken in pieces, by too many lies,
Still it's hard to acknowledge the past --
When she flashes those eyes,
Over and over the song skips,
Just as the final refrain fades away --
Like fools we are caught in the game

Caught in the game,
Caught in the game again --
Caught in the game,
Caught in the game

I swore I'd never again catch myself believin'
Too many times I've been hurt -- and it makes you hard inside
But when I saw you in the city tonight --
Was it just imagination --
Or did your eyes burn a little too bright,
For purely conversation --
Over and over the lights flash down at the corner arcade
Swept away --
Like fools we are caught in the game

Caught in the game,
Caught in the game again --
Caught in the game,
Caught in the game

Over and over the song skips
Just as the final refrain fades away.
Like fools we are caught in the game

Caught in the game,
Caught in the game again --

Caught in the game,
Caught in the game

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Survivor's song "Caught in the Game" speaks about being tempted by love again after dealing with heartbreak too many times in the past. The singer acknowledges the pain they have gone through as a result of opening their heart in the past, but struggles to resist the temptation of love when they see the person who catches their eye. Despite their apprehension and fears, they feel themselves caught in the game of love once again. It appears that both individuals in the song may have had their hearts broken before, and the singer may be especially cautious, but their eagerness to pursue love despite their past lingers. The arcade symbolizes the game of love, and the song left unresolved, and the lovers left caught in the game.

The chorus is a repeated declaration that they are unable to escape the game, even though they may try. The song speaks of the addictive and irresistible nature of love and how easily one can fall into its clutches. It is a cautionary tale for those who have experienced heartbreak in the past but find themselves drawn to love once again.

Overall, the lyrics of "Caught in the Game" are about vulnerability, the risks of love, and the difficulties of letting go of past hurts. They reveal how complicated relationships can be, but also the power of love to pull us back in no matter how hard we try to resist.

The most progressive song of Survivor ever.
I love the riff and everything, all of 'em.
I kinda hoped Survivor would make more songs like this back in the day.

Dirty Squirrell

Me too.

Killer song, haven’t heard this since 1984!
Wish more of Dave in video. Such a fantastic singer oh my god.

One of Survivor's best and most underrated songs. I wish this song was a hit when it was originally released because it is a great song.

@Patrick Longworth Maybe Kansas because Kansas had a song called Play the Game Tonight. But yeah, Kansas, Triumph, Toto, Rainbow type sound.

TYORBS627

It’s underrated because the album “Caught In The Game” failed to chart the top 100 charts the album was supposed to be a follow up from “Eye Of The Tiger” and I think it’s ridiculous it didn’t hit big I love this album front to back

Cap'n Crunch

What makes you believe it's underrated?

@Chris Tian I can't imagine how Survivor reminds anyone of Kansas. Different bands and sounds. Survivor has been far more relatable to for me than Kansas, especially with depressing songs like "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas. Survivor was more inspiring for me.

Chris Tian

My favourite Survivor song. It reminds me a bit of Kansas, though.

Being a former metal-only guy in the 80's, I still loved this song, the main riff and kick-ass solo. Still solid today! Love this :)
