Global interest in Boyle was triggered by the contrast between her powerful voice and her plain appearance on stage. The juxtaposition of the audience's first impression of her with the standing ovation she received after her performance led to an international media and Internet response. Within nine days of the audition, videos of Boyle — from the show, various interviews, and her 1999 rendition of "Cry Me a River" — had been watched over 100 million times, an online record. Despite the sustained media interest, she later finished in second place in the final of the show, behind dance troupe Diversity.
Boyle's first album, I Dreamed a Dream, was released on 23 November 2009, and has become Amazon's best-selling album in pre-sales. Its first single is a cover of the Jagger/Richards song "Wild Horses." The album includes "You'll See," "I Dreamed a Dream," and "Cry Me a River." According to Billboard, "The arrival of "I Dreamed a Dream" ... marks the best opening week for a female artist's debut album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991."

Hark The Herald Angels Sing
Susan Boyle Lyrics

"Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled"
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
"Christ is born in Bethlehem"
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
Hail the heav'n born prince of peace!
Hail the Son of righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"
The well-known Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" was written by Charles Wesley in 1739 and was originally called "Hymn for Christmas Day". In 1855, the lyrics were modified by George Whitefield, a preacher and founder of Calvinistic Methodism, and are now commonly sung to the tune of "Gutenberg", composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840. The first verse of the song sets the scene of the nativity and the joy and triumph that is felt by all as the angels announce the birth of Christ. The line "God and sinners reconciled" references the belief that Christ's birth was the beginning of the plan of salvation, and that through his death and resurrection, sinners would be reconciled with God.
The second verse shifts focus to Christ as a figure of adoration and eternal significance, referred to as the "everlasting Lord". The phrase "Veiled in flesh the Godhead see" emphasizes the Christian belief in the incarnation, that Christ was both fully divine and fully human. The next line, "Pleased as man with man to dwell", speaks of Christ's willingness to live and relate to humanity, even though he was God. The refrain "Glory to the newborn King!" repeats, underscoring the exaltation of Christ as the Savior of humanity.
In the final verse, Christ is hailed as the "prince of peace" and "Son of righteousness". The image of him rising with healing in his wings echoes a prophecy from Malachi 4:2, and speaks to Christ's ability to restore wholeness and salvation to humanity. The idea that he was "Born that man no more may die" points to the Christian belief in eternal life and salvation, and the final line "Born to give them second birth" underscores this, emphasizing the spiritual rebirth that occurs when a person becomes a Christian.
