I Dreamed A Dream
Susan Boyle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high and life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I prayed that God would be forgiving

Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung, no wine untasted

But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hopes apart
And they turn your dreams to shame

And still I dream he'd come to me
That we would live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living

So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream, I dreamed

Overall Meaning

Susan Boyle's song "I Dreamed a Dream" is a powerful and emotional ballad that speaks to the ups and downs of life. The song starts with Susan dreaming about a different life, a life where love is eternal, and hope is high. She prays to God for forgiveness of her sins and is optimistic about her future.

As the song progresses, Susan talks about the harsh realities of life. Youthful dreams are often used and wasted, and there is no ransom to be paid. The tigers of the night, with voices as soft as thunder, tear your hopes apart and turn your dreams to shame. However, despite this, Susan continues to dream that someone will come into her life and that they will be able to weather any storm together.

The climax of the song is when Susan talks about the stark difference between the life she dreamed of and the life she's living now. Her dream life is so different from the hell she's currently living in. Life has killed the dream that she dreamed. Overall, "I Dreamed a Dream" is a powerful commentary on the dreams we have in life and how they can differ from what we experience.

Susan Boyle is the definition of "don't judge a book by its cover". She made everyone eat their words the second she started singing. Truly an inspiration.

@thegreenmanofnorwich

When she came out in that audition and people pulled faces at her with her beige dress and being (le gasp) 47, it was all rather sad that people had already mostly written her off before she opened her mouth. Then she was funny and a bit flirty and people warmed to her. Then she let loose and the cleaning staff must have been picking jaws off the floor that evening
