Sound of Silence

OP: Paul Simon Music

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,
Because a vision softly creepin',
Left it's seeds while I was sleepin',
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed
By the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dare
Disturb the sound of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made
And the sign flashed out it's warnin',
In the words that it was formin'
And the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls

And tenement halls
Whisper'd the sounds of silence

Overall Meaning

The song Sound of Silence, sung by Susan Wong, is a reflection of the emotions of the singer. The song is about the personified darkness that has been a constant companion for a long time. The singer greets the darkness and starts conversing with it, reminiscing about the past and the vision that has left seeds in the brain. The vision is one of the reasons that the sound of silence still resonates with them. They then walk through the streets of cobblestone, and the picture is painted quite vividly where they turn their collar to the streetlamp as they walk through the darkness.

The singer is then jolted out of their thoughts and dreams by the flash of a neon, and the song shifts to ten thousand people, maybe more. The people are talking without speaking, hearing without listening, writing songs, but with no one to share it with. The singer says that no one dares to disturb the sound of silence. The people bowed and prayed to the neon sign, and the warning flashes out, and the words of the prophets are written on the walls of the subway and tenement halls. The song ends with the whispering of the sounds of silence.
