The man hiding behind the tree is a Southern soldier and the soldiers in blue are Federal troops. I've always interpreted the painting as him being cornered by the enemy and prepared to make his last stand and take as many of the enemy with him as he can.

Да песня отличная. Она про негра едущего к своей возлюбленной. Но возможно это не все, поскольку есть намек на то, что "Сюзанна" это название рабовладельческой плантации.

i have no hate for the confederates. No I do not agree with what they were fighting for. But they are no less American, and any American willing to fight a war for what they believe in deserves just as much respect as any yankee. I refuse to slander the men of the south who died in war over an ideology! And yes, I am a Yank, not to far from Gettysburg as a matter of fact

The confederates never considered them self to be anything different from Americans. They just wanted to defend the practice of slavery. The civil war was not a succession war.
Confederates consider themselves be more American than Yankees, most of the time .
