Susan and Frank are defined by how they view the past, and how they go about trying to control the narrative.

Frank hated his time in middle school - he was a nerdy kid who got bullied, just like Greg, and tried to get his son to be a "man" so that he could like vicariously though him, but ultimately gave up and neglected his family because he didn't get what he wanted. He dislikes Roderick because he's rebellious and probably sees a lot of his own bullies in him. He dislikes Greg because he reminds him of his worst years, but has no aspirations to fix that and just dreams of being rich and famous without putting in any effort. He doesn't yet dislike Manny because, well... "he's onwy thwee" and can still be molded into a tool for him to make himself feel better about his past.

Susan is nostalgia personafied; she too tries to relive her past, but only as she remembers it - nobody else gets to have a say in her narrative. She tries to get devices banned so that everything's like her childhood, she treats all her children as if they're infants because she wants to always have the omnipotent control over them she had when they were children, she forces them to do things with her because she's deluding herself into believing she's the "cool mom" who all her children love, and she domineers Frank because he's the only other person with the level of control she has, and he wants to rewrite the past rather than just relive it.

Frank might put his sons down for disappointing him, but Susan goes beyond even that. When she found out how bad Greg was at basketball after forcing him to do it to relive her days as a player, she TRADES HIM TO THE RIVAL TEAM IN HOPES THAT HE MAKES THEM LOSE. Having your mom care more about her favorite team winning a game (a MIDDLESCHOOL GAME no less) than about your self-esteem has to hurt. Thankfully, she gets her just desserts; Greg gets the winning shot and celebrates with the team she hoped would be brought down by him, while she has to stew in her plans being foiled.

Greg is a lot more like the two of them than he'd care to admit though. Where his parents take refuge in the past, Greg takes solace in the future, dreaming up a scene where he's rich and famous. He rejects reality and never tries to actually put the effort needed to make that dream a reality though. He also tries to live vicariously in the future by setting up a dynamic with Rowley where Rowley puts in the effort and Greg reaps the rewards.

Roderick is the only one of them to actually have a realistic perspective. He doesn't delude himself and try to control the story, he just puts the effort in to make his wishes a reality. He is a drummer for a band, he does have fans, and based on what we see of how he does take responsibility for cleaning up his messes, he's got everything he needs to actually have the life he wants, instead of projecting it onto other people.

Tbh, I think Susan and Frank's parenting may be a contributing factor to Rodrick, Greg and Manny's behavior.

Manny: Susan and Frank basically let him get away with everything. So Manny basically has this new mindset now that he can get away with anything, and his parents won't give ten shits. Hell, this kid could murder like twenty people, and Susan and Frank probably won't bat an eye

Rodrick and Greg: Frank and Susan put WAY too much pressure on the both of them. For Greg, its Frank wanting Greg to be the kid Frank couldn't be in middle school. In Rodrick's case, its the fact that Frank doesn't approve of his dreams, his aspirations, Susan treats both Greg and Rodrick like they're 4 years old, and honestly puts too much limitations on the pair.

I think Greg acts the way he is because of Frank and Susan's parenting methods. Video Games are really his only solace, the way to escape from the real world and be in a place where he is accepted. Same with Rodrick. Drums and his band are his only solace, the only way he can cope with the hardships of his family and the outside world.

Simply Put: The Heffleys are seriously dysfunctional

As for the keeping it thing, they actually tried to give it to a shelter but Manny manipulated two men into driving them back to get him, and I guess Susan just gave up at that point because how does Manny not know he'll get whatever he wants at this point

Another example: when the heffley family was decorating the tree in what i think was cabin fever, manny came downstairs and started crying because they were decorating it without them, so susan gave him an ornament. But manny wanted his ornament to be the first one on the tree, so susan forced everyone to take all the ornaments off so manny could get his way.

I think one example a lot of people forget about is this one time when Manny threw a temper tantrum in preschool over his sandwich being cut in half instead of quarters (the way he likes it) and Susan actually drove all the way down there just to make one extra slice in the sandwich instead of just telling the school to tell Manny to just eat the sandwich as it was. It only shows how much she clearly favors the little brat over Greg and Rodrick.

Yes, I haven't read the books in awhile but I watched the second wimpy kid movie yesterday and there was this one example where its shows Susan Heffley's favortism of Manny. It was the scene where Manny purposely ruined/broke Greg's video-game disk with Susan litteraly witnessing it and she just goes "He's only three" and gives him a cookie.

Even as a kid, I always thought that Greg's mother was a pretty terrible parent. Especially considering how she acts like she wants him to have more hobbies, but then shits all over everything he actually shows an interest in.
Greg likes video games, so Susan tries to keep him from playing them. Greg becomes interested in Dungeons and Dragons, so Susan insists on playing along too and blocking every in-game decision that Greg tries to make. Susan starts a book club because she claims that she wants to get Greg interested in reading— Greg brings along a book he is actually excited about and wants to read, Susan declares it unsuitable and insists that they all read the classic kids books that she likes instead. She's so intensely focused on her idealised image of 'the perfect family' that she's completely unwilling to work with the family she actually has.

I remember as a kid I would read these books and criticize them out loud. I was not aware my family could hear me through the walls, and they would get a kick out of me criticizing them. It was more like angrily destroying these characters' logic for their actions and absolutely shitting on Greg's behavior and judging him as a person. Mind you, I was 8 years old doing this.

One thing I don’t think you picked up on was the origin of the psychotic behavior in the family comes from Susan.
Susan is a master manipulator. She’s got her husband under her thumb by having him report to her every cent he spends. Also, she seems to go out of her way to spoil anything that makes her family happy, because she needs to be the center of attention. This is why she insists on the family activities and trips that end horribly also why she coddles manny. He’s just like her and she takes pride in that. If he’s a bad kid, that means she’s bad too.

I’m autistic, and due to that I can see through people’s BS. Especially when it comes to psychotic motivations.

When I first read those books when I was younger, I thought that they are an amazing family, but as soon as I got older (and after watching this video) I started to realize that the Heffley’s are actually a terrible family, especially the parents. Like Susan and Frank let Manny get away with everything and they use the excuse that he is only 3 years old. I mean sure Manny may be a little kid, but they should just at least discipline Manny for once. Greg may be one of my favorite of the Heffley kids, but I really do NOT condone his actions in the books. Like how he broke Rowley’s wrist and didn’t even apologize after that. NTM, Greg only cares about girls, popularity and his reputation.

Susan seems to be like most mothers I know, where they're overwhelmed with their first child so they basically fended for themselves, they were alot harsher on their second child, so they grew up under thumb, then they spoiled their third child so they grow up soft, but she seems to be raising them all three like that simultaneously, like not in stages, but using three different parenting styles for all three children.

Another thing, near the end of the video, you said she tried to get the whole town to shut off all technology for a weekend. Well, when she did that she also got the town to clean up the park, but Greg tried to get out of that. However, when he did, she revealed that she was using a tracking device on his shoelace. I still remember how, in the 5th book, Greg mentions some pictures of him and his brothers across the years, and how Rodrick started out pretty happy kid but grew bitter as time passed by; Greg thinks it's because a lack of attention, and being replaced as the centerpiece by him and Manny, but I think it's just because he was the one who had to endure his parents' bullshit the most.

You know what. I just had a thought. This family is so dysfunctional that I feel like Diary of a Wimpy Kid comes from an unreliable narrator. No child of Manny's age is possibly that able to do what he does, no father is as childish as Frank, and no mom is as wishywashy about punishments as Susan. But Greg. He could exist. As a horrible person, yes, but still he's the most realistic unreasonable character. And given his age and descriptions and stories he's given, I wouldn't be surprised if he extremely exaggerated certain things, and at times, flat out made them up.

In old school, she says to Greg that selling stuff to volunteers isn’t good and basically commands/munipulates/guilts Greg into volunteering while when the girl scouts wanted to sell Cookies, Greg’s Mom was the first in line. Also, she forces the entire town to voluntarily Unplugged Even though famillies wouldn’t want to do that (I mean what if your kid was going to take online tutoring but because of her he/she couldn’t),AND EVEN THEN THE MOMENT GREG GOT LOST SHE HAS NO PROBLEM LOOKING AT HER PHONE! BASICALLY FORCING EVERYONE TO UNVOLUNTARILY UNPLUG WHILE SHE HAS NO ISSUE WITH HER GOING ON HER PHONE THE MOMENT HER SON IS LOST EVEN THOUGH THE GIRL SCOUTS ALREADY KNOW WHERE HE IS!!! Greg is selfish and what not because that is what has been taught to him, Manny is spoiled and uncaring because that is what has been taught ro him and Rodrick, probably the most neglected out of the 3 kids was the one to turn out into a regular guy. Greg’s Mom is Cruel, bias and flat out can act uncaring to her children and their mental health at times and she likes to force people into doing what she wants because she has a totally different outlook on life that makes her believe that the problem is that Greg is just Being a trouble maker when the real problem was her mindset in the first place was just broken.

You should do Rowley’s parents next, they Constantly baby him and don’t treat him like an actual adolescent, another thing is that because of this, Rowley is actually pretty prideful, an example is in book 5 where Rowley doesn’t want to listen to Greg about not going to a party, not because he wanted to do what he wanted, but because of some random pimple. Speaking of which, whenever Rowley has a new “thing” going on for him like “slick” or his pimple, he proudly shows it off for no reason (he also Felt no remorse for whacking Greg’s hand With a Malet because from his parent’s constant over babying of him, he never sees himself as in the wrong in Any situation).

She's also the reason why Manny never interacts with kids his age;
In The Third Wheel, when Greg was picked on by a kid when he was in kindergarden she decided to make a book about it after his family moved (which showed the kid being even worse than his real life counterpart) and she was gonna publish it, but she had to give up on that when the kid moved back.
So a few years later she decided to read the story to Manny.
The objective was to make sure Manny doesn't act like the kid in the book but instead it made Manny absolutely TERRIFIED of the other kids (well he's one to talk).
So yeah, she's one of the reasons why Manny doesn't have any friends (other than that kid who likes to drink grape juice but that's debatable).
Oh yeah and also she had the habit of putting Greg as the main subject in the parents help section in the newspaper she works (or worked) in without his consent

I think one key thing that was left out of the video was that she's impatient. She has photos of different families because she didn't want to wait in line for a picture with the mascot. But the worst of her impatience was when Greg wanted to meet the author of his favorite graphic novel for his autograph and while he was in the bathroom, she forged the signature and kept it a secret for months. It wasn't until Greg tried to sell the book did he find the truth.

She tried to at least redeem her actions by tracking the author down and get his autograph, but she didn't even bother to check that he spelled "Greg" right. So now Greg has his novel signed out for "Craig".

One scene where I really hated Susan was in Double Down when Greg was about to leave a new “friend“ he made (it was actually a kid who found his project balloon) and the kid accused Greg of stealing a lego piece from him. Although Deep End was a bad book. There’s really only 2 times she disciplined her kids (that I know):
1: in “rodrick rules”, when manny stuffs a cookie in the dvd slot of Greg’s video game console, manny tries to use his “I’m onwy thwee” excuse to get off scot free, but Susan wasn’t gonna let him have it, so she makes manny apologize, manny attempts to make up for greg by giving him a tinfoil ball with toothpicks sticking out of it, but Greg didn’t understand how that was supposed to make up for his broken video game system, I don’t either.

Reading these books in middle school or elementary school, you may relate with Greg. Reading them as an adult you realize how delusional Greg is with his expectations for the future in terms of finances, a career, morals, and his selfish attitude. But then again, he is a wimpy kid in middle school. It’d be more interesting to read about his stories in high school or college.

When I read Doawk, I really disliked Susan, as she's too controlling over her two oldest sons...yet she lets Manny get away with almost killing his own family...Frank is also pretty bad, but he's kind of better than Susan. I think Greg's like that because of his parents. Those scenes, where she is being a hypocrite, lowkey angers me, such as telling Greg and Rowley not to sell water to the volunteers at the town park, yet buying the cookies from the girl scouts, forcing the entire town to go technology-free for a whole weekend, but, using a phone herself, even though it was to track Greg, taking away that leather jacket in front of the whole classroom, yet Frank had no problem with it, etc.

Legit she, Frank, and Manny are the entire reason why the whole family is dysfunctional in the first place and blame it on Greg and Rodrick. Rodrick Rules depicts how much of a hypocrite she is since she claimed that lying was bad when she's doing the exact same thing when publishing her articles about Greg and Rodrick's relationship. I really liked how Greg and Rodrick's method of socializing was helping them get along but Susan's method is what tore them apart. Legit it would've been satisfying if Greg went all Encanto'd and called her out for being the entire reason why they can't get along as well as only doing the "Mom Bucks Project" to strengthen Greg and Rodrick's relationship just so she could publish their progress in her articles just for her image. Frank was just focused on his obsession with history and Manny just being plain manipulative that tears the family apart.

I never liked the characters as a kid but when I grew up I realized that the Heffleys as a whole a terrifyingly messed up. No wonder Greg grew up as a narcissistic sociopath.

One thing I think readers should bear in mind is that everything is coming from Greg's perspective. You're reading his diary. I don't think Greg is the most trustworthy.
