In 2003, Suh signed with Epic/Sony; she ended up working with Glen Ballard, a well-known producer/songwriter/arranger.At first, Ballard only agreed to produce a few songs for Suh, but he was so impressed with her work that he ended up producing her entire debut album (a self-titled CD that Epic released in April 2005).
With the album completed, Suh reflects on the making of her debut: "My mission has always been to create music that transcends boundaries, to make music that is universal."
Although Suh has lived in the United States her entire life, both of her parents are immigrants who moved to southern California from Korea in the '60s. Suh's involvement with music began when she was only eight and joined a Korean children's choir, whose repertoire ranged from traditional Korean songs to American pop. At 13, Suh left Los Angeles for New Hampshire, where she attended a boarding school and did her share of songwriting during her adolescent years; Suh was around 17 when she recorded a six-song EP, pressed 1,000 copies onto CDs, and managed to sell about 700 of them to her schoolmates.
After reaching adulthood, Suh attended Brown University in Rhode Island (where she obtained a degree in English), but spent as much time as she could visiting New York City and performing in Lower Manhattan clubs. A career in music is not something that Suh's ambitious parents encouraged — in fact, they tried to talk her out of it and encouraged her to go into a more stable, less volatile line of work. Music, they asserted, should be nothing more than a hobby for Suh. But her parents' lack of support didn't discourage the L.A. native; if anything, it inspired her to persevere and work even harder at having a career in music. "Your Battlefield," one of Suh's songs, was inspired by her career-related disagreements with her parents.
Harmony

But it seems that we're all the same
Cause when I sing to you
You are singing back to me
And we sing in harmony
Harmony, we sing in melody
Harmony, harmony
You and I we sing in rhapsody
In this moment
I feel so much lighter
In this moment
I can breathe
Cause what I give to you
Comes right back to me
And we sing in harmony
Harmony, we sing in melody
Harmony, harmony
You and I we sing in rhapsody
I will tell you all of my secrets
I will tell you all of my chores
All my answers, all my answers
Lie in this song that I sing to you
And we sing in harmony
Harmony, we sing in melody
Harmony, harmony
You and I we sing in rhapsody
All the night, all the night
We sing in rhapsody
The lyrics of Susie Suh's "Harmony" suggest that music can bring people together in a collective experience that transcends differences in identity. The first verse indicates that despite not knowing each other's names or backgrounds, the act of singing creates a sense of unity. The line "we're all the same" can be interpreted as a recognition of our shared humanity, or perhaps a statement that music allows us to momentarily forget our differences. The repetition of the word "harmony" in the chorus further emphasizes the idea of a shared experience, and the phrase "you and I" highlights the intimacy that can be created through music.
The second verse suggests that this collective experience can have a transformative effect on the individual. The singer feels "lighter" and more able to "breathe" when singing with others, implying that music can have a healing or cathartic effect. The line "what I give to you / comes right back to me" reinforces the idea that music can create a reciprocal relationship between individuals, where each person contributes to the collective experience and receives something in return.
The final verse suggests that the song itself contains the singer's deepest truths and secrets. By sharing the song with the listener, the singer is also sharing a part of themselves. The repeated phrase "we sing in rhapsody" reinforces the idea of a shared experience, but also suggests an exuberant, almost ecstatic quality to the singing.
Overall, "Harmony" can be interpreted as a celebration of the power of music to bring people together in a collective experience that transcends differences, and to provide individuals with a transformative and cathartic outlet for their emotions.
