In 2003, Suh signed with Epic/Sony; she ended up working with Glen Ballard, a well-known producer/songwriter/arranger.At first, Ballard only agreed to produce a few songs for Suh, but he was so impressed with her work that he ended up producing her entire debut album (a self-titled CD that Epic released in April 2005).
With the album completed, Suh reflects on the making of her debut: "My mission has always been to create music that transcends boundaries, to make music that is universal."
Although Suh has lived in the United States her entire life, both of her parents are immigrants who moved to southern California from Korea in the '60s. Suh's involvement with music began when she was only eight and joined a Korean children's choir, whose repertoire ranged from traditional Korean songs to American pop. At 13, Suh left Los Angeles for New Hampshire, where she attended a boarding school and did her share of songwriting during her adolescent years; Suh was around 17 when she recorded a six-song EP, pressed 1,000 copies onto CDs, and managed to sell about 700 of them to her schoolmates.
After reaching adulthood, Suh attended Brown University in Rhode Island (where she obtained a degree in English), but spent as much time as she could visiting New York City and performing in Lower Manhattan clubs. A career in music is not something that Suh's ambitious parents encouraged — in fact, they tried to talk her out of it and encouraged her to go into a more stable, less volatile line of work. Music, they asserted, should be nothing more than a hobby for Suh. But her parents' lack of support didn't discourage the L.A. native; if anything, it inspired her to persevere and work even harder at having a career in music. "Your Battlefield," one of Suh's songs, was inspired by her career-related disagreements with her parents.

Ojalá no te hubiera conocido nunca
Ojalá no te hubiera conocido nunca
Ojalá no te hubiera conocido nunca
Ojalá no te hubiera conocido nunca
Ojalá no te hubiera conocio nunca
Ojalá no te hubiera conocio nunca
Ojalá no te hubiera conocio nunca
Pa no amarte.
oh ouo ouo oh ouo
oh ouo ouo oh ouo
Si algún día yo vuelvo a soñar intentaré,
seguir con lo mismo
y diez minutos antes de dormir yo estaré...
siempre que quiera contigo,
siempre que quiera contigo,
siempre que tú quieras.
Ojalá no te hubiera conocido nunca
Ojalá no te hubiera conocido nunca
Ojalá no te hubiera conocido nunca
Ojalá no te hubiera conocido nunca
Para no amarte siempre,
para no verte sin verte,
para borrar tu recuerdo
del que siempre me acuerdo y nunca me deja en paz
oh ouo ouo oh ouo
oh ouo ouo oh ouo
oh ouo ouo oh ouo
...ya no quiero mal de amores.
The song "Why" by Susie Suh is a beautiful and intense expression of love and loss. The lyrics are in Spanish, and while it may be difficult for non-Spanish speakers to understand the message, the emotion in the vocals and instrumentation is palpable.
The song opens with the line "Un día soñando en un sueño soñé," which translates to "One day dreaming in a dream, I dreamed." The dream is about being with the person the singer loves, "dreaming of making love to you." The singer vividly remembers the colors of the person's hair and skin, even when she is awake.
But despite these intense feelings, the singer expresses a wish that she had never met the person she loves, saying "Ojalá no te hubiera conocido nunca" (I wish I had never met you). She repeats this phrase, emphasizing the pain of loving someone who is not there, and the desire to forget and move on from the pain.
The chorus repeats the line "Para no amarte siempre," which means "to not love you always." The singer wishes she could erase all memories of the person she loves, to stop seeing them even when she looks away. The song ends with the line "Ya no quiero mal de amores," meaning "I don't want love sickness anymore," expressing a desire to move on from the pain of loving someone who is not there.
Overall, "Why" is a powerful expression of love and heartbreak. The singer uses vivid imagery and emotional lyrics to express the pain of loving someone who is not there, and the desire to move on and forget.
